In this dissertation, the electromagnetic fields radiated from an ingested source through the complex and inhomogeneous human body models are analyzed numerically by employing the simulator developed in our laboratory. The simulator is based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with three human body models and the dielectric properties of human tissues.
The propagated electric fields from an ingested short-dipole current density through the western male model are saved at 6 receiving points vertically placed on the abdomen of the model, and those propagation characteristics are analyzed in the frequency range of 100 to 700 MHz. As the receiving point moves away from the source, the amplitudes of the received electric fields show relatively lower attenuation above 400 MHz and generate an unusual dip pattern at a particular frequency below 400 MHz. Those two unusual features are also generated in the case of a homogeneous circular cylinder. From the simulation results in such the simplified human model, it is found that the surface wave propagated along the surface of the human body model is the cause of the two unusual features.
Then the transient phenomenon of the electromagnetic propagation from the same ingested source is investigated. The pulse waveforms of the received electric fields at the same 6 receiving points are distorted in the progress of time as the distances between the source and receiving points increase. The cause of the distortion is explained as the interference of the surface and direct waves. Then the effect of the pulse distortion is evaluated by computing the bit error rate (BER) performance in the case of the on-off keying (OOK) modulation. As expected, the multi-path interference of the direct and surface waves degrades the BER performance significantly.
The effects of gender difference on the electromagnetic propagations are numerically analyzed with Japanese adult male and female models. After the same source is excited in the central region of those small intestines, the computed electric fields are saved at receiving points placed on the surfaces of both models. The amplitudes of the received electric fields also reveal two unusual behaviors in the frequency domain. In spite of the nearly identical incident angles, the dip frequencies of the male model occur in lower frequencies than those of the female model. To find the cause of the gender difference, the location of the ingested source as well as the effect of dielectric property is investigated in the case of a homogeneous circular cylinder. The simulation results reveal that the dip frequency varies more significantly due to the location of the ingested source than the electrical property of the homogeneous circular cylinder. It leads us to conclude that the gender difference on the electromagnetic propagation is not serious in the frequency range of 100 to 700 MHz.
Finally, a spiral-type microstrip antenna built in a capsule endoscope is designed to operate at 428 MHz in the small intestine. The effects of the interior and the exterior components of the capsule endoscope on the built-in antenna are analyzed numerically. The interior components such as two batteries, camera module, light-emitting diodes, and optical dome are removed one by one. And the effect of its exterior component is analyzed by increasing the dielectric property of the exterior components, capsule shell, until no capsule shell. The simulation results illustrate that the resonant frequencies and matching characteristics are affected more significantly according to the electrical property of the exterior component than any internal component.
