Virgo serena, (ii) Absalon, fili mi, (iii) Inviolata, integra et casta es, Maria의 세 곡이다.
The goal of this study is (i) to reconstruct the Renaissance theorists' views about the role of modes in musical expression, and (ii) to apply these views in analyzing some selected motets of Josquin des Prez(c1440-1521). Such a round-about approach in critical analysis can be justified by the observation that the aesthetic aspiration from the same piece of music may change with historical and cultural background. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to analyze Josquin's motets with modern views accustomed to tonality and complex chordal articulation. The same observation implies that we may gain deeper insights into the genius of Josquin's music when we see and feel his pieces through the reconstructed viewpoints of Renaissance theorists.
Josquin des Prez had an unsurpassed reputation among his contemporaries and took a pivotal position during the Renaissance period. He has been hailed as the first master of text expressions and, indeed, the first musical genius. This study concentrated on Josquin's motets which best demonstrate his great ability of text expression. Motets were more closely tied to specific texts than were mass movements and yet they were freer form than secular song settings, and thus the motets should have been the most fruitful genre for the exploration of expressive uses of modes.
The traditional view about modes during the Renaissance period is that each mode has a characteristic ethos and that each mode is characterized by its finalis and ambitus together with repercussio, derived from the psalm tones of Gregorian chants. The traditional view, based on the monophonic music, was seriously challenged by the introduction of polyphonic music and the practice of transposition. Thus, the most influential Renaissance theorists-among whom I would name Tinctoris, Aaron as well as Glarean and Zarlino-all depend, more or less, on the theory of octave species in defining modes. From the standpoint of practicing composers, the rigid rules of modes, defined by finalis and ambitus as well as repercussio, became increasingly burdensome, inhibiting a freer artistic expression of various aesthetic aspects of texts. Thus composers depended increasingly on the characteristic intervals of each mode, such as diapente and diatessaron, in presenting modality. In this way, they could emphasize the modality as much as they wanted, by outlining the characteristic intervals melodically, or by adopting characteristic cadences of each mode, articulated with musica ficta. The variable emphasis of modality provided composers with audible means of conveying modality and, thus, with structural tools to organize music in parallel with the structure of texts. In this process, the characteristic intervals played an important aesthetic role, comparable to the tonal triad in modem music.
With the reconstructed viewpoint of Renaissance theorists at hand, the later part of the paper is devoted in analyzing some selected motets of Josquin des Prez, namely (i) Ave Maria . . . Virgo serena, (ii) Absalon, fili mi, and (iii) Inviolata, integra etcasta es. It is hard to summarize the result of our critical analysis or to assert how much we gained from this viewpoint in getting deeper insights into the genius of Josquin's music. Rather I will simply cite a case below where the aesthetic structure as well as the composer's true intention might have been misunderstood without a carefully reconstructed viewpoint.
After the introductory salutation of Ave Maria . . . Virgo serena, verse 1 expresses the solemn joy of Maria's conception that fills heaven and earth with new gladness(Ave cujus conceptio / Solemni plena gaudio / coelestia, terretria / nova replet laetitia). We understood that the musical phrase corresponding to verse 1 was cadenced with the utmost modal expression: tenor descending the modal diapente twice with rhythmic displacement for easier audibility among the polyphonic complexity, bassus ascending to the final outlining modal diatessaron, while superius and altus preparing tenor's grand descent with fauxbourdon discantus. Without the reconstructed viewpoint of modal music, i.e., if we had analyzed the piece with our modem view accustomed with tonality and various manipulation of complex chords, we may have failed to see that phrase being so great and beautiful.
Indeed, we need not go very much to demonstrate the fact that our aesthetic feelings depends on our cultural environment and that we need to understand the cultural background of a composer to analyze his music properly. This is not to be misunderstood as emphasizing the radical difference of aesthetical viewpoints between ours and Renaissance theorists'. Rather, this analysis strongly suggests that their aesthetical viewpoints had changed only with surprising continuity. Such continuity, I believe, provides us with a good reason why the study of Josquin's music can be the concern of modern composers and theorists as well as musicologists.
