This study attempted to explore the possibility of developing a new group treatment program for domestic violence perpetrators by examining the effectiveness of the current group treatment program. This study also examined case studies in order to prevent and deal with domestic violence effectively. The feminist approach was adopted to deal with patriarchical gender roles in Korean society, and the cognitive behavioral approach was utilized to help domestic violence perpetrators change their violent behaviors and coping skills. The feminist perspectives are helpful in providing them with the framework to understand the domestic violence caused by a patriarchical and male-dominant Korean society, the cognitive behavior approach helps the perpetrators gain cognitive insights and coping skills. The comprehensive feminism and cognitive behavioral group treatment (FCBT) program consists of implementing the equality of gender roles, teaching anger management and communication skills.
The following procedures were undertaken to develop the current FCBT group treatment program:
First, literature reviews on domestic violence and group treatment programs for perpetrators were conducted to suggest a theoretical model for the FCBT group treatment program.
Second, a group treatment program based on the FCBT model was formulated with 10 sessions. The nine domestic violence perpetrators who were referred from the Seoul domestic court system participated in the group program approximately three hours and a half a week. Altogether, they spent a total of 35 hours during the ten week span of the program. Both male and female group leaders ran the program.
Third, participants' changes in violent behaviors and gender role, reduction of anger level, and effectiveness of coping skills were statistically analysed and case studies were also conducted to find out the process of actual change and explore the possibility of a new group treatment program.
The examination of group treatment effectiveness was conducted in two ways: 1) The self-report scales were administered before, during and after the group sessions. The pre-post retests for violent behaviors, gender role and attitudes, anger level, and coping skill scales for the participants were done. 2) Sequential analysis on the participants' reports taken verbatim from ten sessions were statistically analysed to find out how much responsibility they accepted for their violent behaviors. The participants' reports were recorded and analysed by the GLM system and one factorial variance analysis. The case study was focused on participants' gender roles and attitudes to develop an FCBT group treatment program for the perpetrators.
The following results were found:
First, the FCBT program was effective in reducing participants' violent behaviors. All the participants demonstrated a significant reduction of domestic violence behaviors. They were able to maintain non-violent behaviors even after the three month follow-up period.
Second, all the participants showed meaningful changes in gender roles and attitudes. For example, they became more flexible and open to gender roles and maintained their new cognitive attitudes after three months. The results were very significant from the feminist point which emphasized equal and flexible relationships between men and women. The case study results also showed that participants who maintained male dominant and sexist attitudes in the beginning of the program were converted to more equal and flexible gender roles and attitudes towards the end of the program.
Third, the participants were able to control their anger more effectively and use those skills continuously. For example, participants reduced their level of anger significantly later in the program and maintained a lower anger level during the follow-up period. The case study indicated that the participants expressed anger to control and manipulate their wives, consistent with patriarchical value systems. The feminist cognitive approach is important and necessary in correcting this dysfunctional male-dominant value system of the participants.
Fourth, although participants did not improve their coping skills statistically, they were observed using coping skills such as anger control, time-out and communication skills after the termination of the program. This result suggests that a more comprehensive FCBT coping skills program should be provided in the early part of the program.
Fifth, the participants showed a tendency to accept their responsibility for using violence in general. Initially, they did not accept responsibility and blamed their spouses for triggering their violent behaviors, but they later began to have insight about their role of responsibility. In doing so, they also attempted to control their anger more effectively by using skills learned from the program. Later, they showed a high level of responsibility for their violent behaviors by having a clear understanding of the whole picture of domestic violence and coping with it more effectively.
The results demonstrated that FCBT approach is effective and appropriate in reducing the domestic violence in Korean society. The study showed high possibility of development of FCBT domestic violence program for the Korean perpetrators.
In summary, FCBT program for domestic violence perpetrators was proven to be effective, and the model is appropriate for domestic violence.
