Research on the plays of Ham Se-deok has been conducted from various perspectives. Among them, boy/girl protagonists, ocean motifs, textual research, and comparative literature research have served as major research keywords.
It is apparent that there are many ocean-themed works among Ham Se-deok's plays. Nevertheless, not many studies have focused on ocean motifs in Ham Sedeok's plays. This paper examines how Ham Se-deok's experience of both the ocean and reading are related to his plays, and what patterns are revealed in the oceanic motifs of his plays, by analyzing the plays Sanheoguri, Muuido Travel, and Haeyeon, a Sea Swallow. The reason why Ham Se-deok used so many oceanic motifs is as follows. First, he was greatly influenced by the environment in which he was born and raised. He spent his childhood, boyhood, and adolescence in Mokpo and Incheon, two port cities. In particular, his enjoyment of experiences such as camping and fishing while traveling to various islands around Incheon, including Wolmido Island, Yongyudo Island, Muuido Island, and Palmido Island, with close friends in adolescence, is thought to have had a great influence on him.
Second, after graduating from the Incheon Commercial School, he worked as a clerk at a Japanese bookstore, Nikanshobo(日韓書房), in Seoul, and his experience of reading Western plays translated into Japanese in a collection of world literature and world plays had a great influence on his creation of ocean-themed plays. Thispaper compares his works with John Millington Synge’s Riders to the Sea, Henrik Ibsen’s Die Frau Vom Meere, and Herman Heijermans’s Op Hoop van Zegen in an attempt to confirm that he was greatly influenced by these particular ocean-themed plays. This paper’s analysis of Ham Se-deok's ocean-themed plays, Sanheoguri, Muuido Travel, and Haeyeon, shows that the ocean in his plays is largely divided into a space of survival and one of romance.
