Clusters of galaxies are the largest virialized systems in the universe, whose evolution probes the underlying cosmology. Clusters dramatically evolve during a collision with another cluster, which injects an immense amount of energy into the cluster environment. However, understanding the merger process is challenging as we can only observe a single snapshot of this complex event. Multi-wavelength observations can reduce ambiguity in the merger history as each wavelength traces different components. Radio relics play a key role in merger history reconstruction. Radio relics are diffuse synchrotron sources in the cluster merger outskirts, energized by merger shocks. The unique strength of radio relics in tracing merger shock has been utilized to infer the collision axis, the merger phase, and the mass ratio of the collision. However, recent multi-wavelength observations of radio relic cluster mergers reported discrepancies between the radio relics and X-ray observations or weak-lensing analysis in the inferred cluster mass or the reconstructed merger history. Moreover, the diverse morphology of radio relics further puzzled their formation mechanism. In this thesis, we aim to understand the origin of radio relics and the merger history reconstruction using radio relics with idealized and cosmological zoom-in simulations.
We perform idealized cluster merger simulations on the four radio relic cluster mergers with characteristic radio relics. We utilize the latest weak-lensing mass estimate of the substructures as the initial condition. By comparing the suite of idealized cluster merger simulations with multi-wavelength observations, we reconstruct the merger history that can reproduce the observed radio relic morphology and properties. Moreover, we found that the radio relics provide a robust indicator of the collision axis, while the X-ray tail extension rotates and may mislead the collision axis during the off-axis cluster merger. The diffusive shock acceleration model was too inefficient to reproduce the luminosity and the size of the observed radio relics with simulated radio relics. We found that the merger shock can explain the observed radio relics under the presence of fossil cosmic-ray electrons. Based on our low-frequency radio observations, we suggest that the past activity of an active galactic nucleus of cluster galaxies is the source of fossil cosmic-ray electrons.
For cosmological zoom-in simulation, we analyze the radio relics in the massive cluster mergers identified in TNG-Cluster. TNG-Cluster is a suite of magnetohydrodynamical cosmological zoom-in simulations of 352 massive galaxy clusters with $\MTWOC = 10^{14.3-15.4}~\MSUN$ sampled from a 1 Gpc-size cosmological box. The simulations implemented the state-of-the-art galaxy formation model and kpc-scale high numerical resolution. TNG-Cluster returns a variety of radio relics with diverse morphologies, encompassing textbook examples of double radio relics, single relics, and ``inverted" radio relics that are convex to the cluster center. Moreover, we find that extremely large radio relics ($>$ 2 Mpc) are predominantly produced in massive cluster mergers with $\MFIVEC\gtrsim8\times10^{14}~\MSUN$, which underscores simulating massive mergers is necessary to reproduce the observed giant radio relics. We found that radio relics can inform the direction of the cluster mass elongation and the time since the collision, highlighting their role in merger history reconstructions.
Finally, we check the bias of weak-lensing mass estimates during cluster mergers. We perform realistic mock weak-lensing analysis on the idealized cluster merger simulations. We found that the weak-lensing analysis overestimates the halo mass in the early merger phase, while the mass is underestimated in the late merger phase near the first apocenter passage. The bias amplitude increases with the system mass, reaching $\mytilde60\%$ of mass overestimation at the early phase of the $\mytilde10^{15}~M_{\odot}$ equal mass merger. The weak-lensing analysis can reproduce the true mass ratio despite the large mass bias. Moreover, we derive a method to mitigate the weak-lensing mass bias using the radio relic separation as a proxy of time since the collision. With the new technique, we demonstrate the underestimation of time since the collision can be corrected using radio relics.
This thesis utilized idealized simulations supported by an accurate weak-lensing mass estimate and the latest cosmological zoom-in simulations TNG-Cluster to understand the formation of radio relics in cluster mergers. Based on our analysis, we concluded that the characteristic and diverse morphology of observed radio relics can be explained by the merger shock generated from the collision between the weak-lensing masses and by the complex nature of the cosmological shockwaves. Moreover, we showed that radio relics can constrain the merger history by providing the collision axis, the time since the collision, and the direction of dark matter halo elongation. We believe this panchromatic view of radio relics with reconstructed merger history enables us to use radio relic cluster mergers as an astrophysical laboratory for testing the nature of dark matter and the plasma acceleration mechanism.
