In this essay I explore the complex influences of Locke’s An Essay concerning Human Understanding upon Wordsworth’s thoughts and works. ‘After Newton’s Principia, it is safe to say that Locke’s An Essay concerning Human Understanding was the most important book at Wordsworth’s Cambridge. Nearly all of the moral questions asked of degree candidates on examination Wednesday dealt with subjects from the Essay. The two major philosophical works produced by Cambridge men during the eighteenth century, Hartley’s Observations on Man and Paley’s Moral Philosophy, leaned heavily on Locke’s theory of the mind. The reason for Locke’s ascendancy at Newton’s University is not hard to find. Misreading both authors, Cambridge thinkers assumed that Locke’s sensationalism bore out Newton’s materialism. As they read Locke, thought was the creation of material objects of sense.
Wordsworth’s beliefs were largely the formulation of his own dealings with substantial things. The belief in the grandeur and dignity of man, and the holiness of the heart’s affection, arose out of the ruins of the theological view of man. ‘Locke’smechanistic interpretation of the world leads him in several places into necessitarianism. For this reason An Essay concerning Human Understandinghelped prepare Wordsworth to receive Godwin’s necessitarian Phlitical Justice.
The influence of the seventeenth century philospher John Locke on modes of thinking far exceeds his fame. His point of view coincides completely with that of the ordinary intelligent man. Informed by a passion for truth, Locke believed that a mind was capable of finding truth only when trained specifically to think; he conceived of education as a discipline of this intellect. His primary epistemological thesis was that the ways in which we perceive the world, including ourselves, are determined by the ways in which we experience the world. Locke’s theory of the mind as a tabula rasamade emblems of the mind in its natural state.
