This study aims to identify factors influencing pet owners' motivations for traveling with companion animals, as well as factors related to travel constrains negotiation. By reviewing previous research and theories, the study seeks to understand the impact of these factors on pet owners' travel motivations, travel constrains negotiation, and behavioral intentions regarding companion animal travel. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the activation of a culture of traveling with pets and provide valuable insights for developing marketing strategies for companion animal travel.
Based on this foundation, hypotheses and a model were established for the study, and these hypotheses were verified through statistical analysis. The survey participants for this study were pet owners residing in South Korea, and we distributed the Google online survey URL via social media platforms. We utilized a total of 368 responses collected for empirical analysis. Summarizing the findings of this study: Firstly, pet owners' motivations for traveling with companion animals were extracted into two sub-factors: 'Self-oriented motivation' and 'Pet-oriented motivation'. Travel negotiation was extracted into three sub-factors: 'Exploratory negotiation', 'Companionship negotiation', and 'Systematic negotiation'. Behavioral intention was identified as a single factor.
Secondly, to investigate the impact of pet owners' motivations for traveling with companion animals on travel negotiations, regression analysis was conducted. Regarding the influence of travel motivations on exploratory negotiation in travel constraints in companion animal travel, it was found that the motivation for traveling with pets significantly and positively affects exploratory negotiation. Similarly, the examination of the influence of travel motivations on companionship negotiation in companion animal travel revealed that the motivation for traveling with pets also significantly and positively affects companionship negotiation.
In contrast, self-oriented travel motivation was found to have no significant influence on companionship travel constraints negotiation, indicating a preference not to include companions other than family members excluding pets. Furthermore, in the context of companion animal travel, both self-oriented and pet-oriented travel motivations were found to significantly and positively influence systematic negotiation of travel constraints.
Thirdly, regression analysis was conducted to examine the impact of pet owners' travel negotiations on behavioral intentions. The results indicated that two out of the three factors of travel negotiations in companion animal travel—specifically, companionship and systematic negotiations—significantly and positively influence behavioral intentions.
This suggests that efforts to actively seek and persuade travel companions and adjust schedules in companion animal travel enhance behavioral intentions. Similarly, focusing efforts on systematically planning trips and budgeting also increases behavioral intentions for companion animal travel. These findings imply that enhancing these aspects can strengthen the intention to engage in companion animal travel.
Based on the findings of this study, the implications are as follows: Firstly, it was found that sub-factors of pet owners' travel motivations—'Self-oriented travel' and 'Travel for the pet'—significantly influence behavioral intentions through travel negotiations. This underscores the importance of developing products and marketing programs targeting pet owners who consider their pets as integral family members. Creating opportunities for both pet owners and their pets to enjoy new experiences together and engage in programs that allow pets to explore new environments and interact with the outside world will be crucial. Emphasizing the healing aspects of travel where pet owners can escape everyday stress and experience a mood uplift should also be highlighted.
Secondly, among the three sub-factors of travel negotiations— exploratory, companionship, and systematic negotiations—it was observed that systematic negotiation has the most significant positive impact on behavioral intentions, followed by companionship negotiation and exploratory negotiation. This highlights the importance of efforts such as information gathering and systematic travel planning in enhancing behavioral intentions, indicating that meticulous planning and budgeting efforts contribute to increased willingness for companion animal travel.
Therefore, strategies should be tailored to each type of pet, considering their schedules, budgets, and conditions for effective planning in companion animal travel. These insights suggest that catering to the emotional bonds between pet owners and their pets, along with systematic planning and negotiation efforts, can effectively promote and support companion animal travel experiences.
Based on the findings of this study, it is evident that there is a growing interest among potential travelers in traveling with companion animals. Emphasizing stress relief in daily life and promoting an accommodating attitude are key to encouraging information exploration and systematic planning for companion animal travel, thereby translating interest into actual travel behaviors. This study highlights important marketing implications aimed at addressing travel constraints and providing concrete methods to potential travelers who have yet to experience companion animal travel. Implementing marketing strategies across various channels can effectively stimulate actual companion animal travel. Moreover, leveraging these insights can serve as valuable foundational data to propose new solutions for the stagnant tourism industry by considering future potential travelers interested in companion animal travel. This approach not only meets the evolving needs of travelers but also contributes to revitalizing the tourism sector with innovative offerings
