지적장애청소년 어머니의 양육경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

The main purpose of this present study is to explore the caregiving experience of mothers of adolescents with intellectual disability who have reached the age of completing high school, in order to gain a more in depth understanding of essential meaning of their experience as a caregiver. Based on the nature of experience found in their descriptions, the focus of this study is to present base materials for the practical social work plans that can be helpful for adolescents with intellectual disability, and in particular for a mother as a main caregiver.
The collection of sources for this paper is based on in-depth interviews from twelve mothers raising adolescent children whose level of intellectual disability is categorized as from mild to profound. Data were collected between November 2010 and February 2011. Giorgi's analytic method is applied for data analysis in order to extract the essence and structure of general experience penetrating in the individual experience as well as structure of individual experience unique to each participant from which the situational meaning is derived. The criterion based sampling method is used to select the participants for this study.
As a result of the data analysis, this study deduced total 4 constituents and 25 sub constituents on the basis of total 1,025 meaning units from participants' descriptions. The participants have well described the meaning of their experiences, which eventually would be a foothold for not only understanding of how the mothers feel about their adolescent children with disability approaching adulthood but also an opportunity to realize the needs of social work intervention for them. Four constituents include <In a Fog - no place on the stage>, <standing firm in difficulties - searching a place for children>, <groping in the dark - the things that cannot be done alone>, <undergoing a change day after day - better life than as it has been>. Following is a statement of general structure of the constituents.
Before and after when their adolescents children with intellectual disability graduate from high school, which is the critical point affecting life, study participants face the difficulty of choosing between further studies and job for their children, being concerned that they have no other choice but to send them to facilities in consideration of reality. These decision-making struggles take a decisive role in exposing the current situation that there is barely any place for them to settle on the stage of life in community after they graduate from high school. Accordingly, caregivers get busy finding a place for their adolescent to make a living.
Study participants have experienced continuous challenges and difficulties along with intense psychological warfare in the midst of trying out interactions with social structure system. In this process, they learn to choose appropriate methods towards integrating their adolescent children into the community which has been even more diverse and complex. Through the process, study participants come to find a place for their adolescent children. The persistent motherly spirit has motivated them to devote themselves to the integration of their adolescent children with intellectual disability into community. Underlying all of this is accumulated life experience brought the realization that they cannot do it alone.
Study participants come up with the internal plans for their children to be employed at work place outside, or to start a new family business and so on, in the awareness that their life after adulthood is an extension of this critical time period of approaching adulthood from adolescents. They have been giving shapes to their expectation for better life than as it has been, while motivating themselves in the aspiration that the caregiving experience of their adolescents children with disability may give hope to someone.
Finally, this study has an theoretical implication in aspect of providing new meaning for mothers' caregiving experience through expounding the experience of mothers of adolescents with disability reaching adulthood and at the same time the early stage of independence. Furthermore, this study suggests as follows: continuous provision of service through alternative schools for continuing education; constructing the cooperating system for offering counseling programs and case management; creating more jobs and broadening job opportunities through social enterprise and practical social support such as program development for an one on one tailored service; introducing graduation operating system in response to special admission for the disabled; establishing adult guardian system; guaranteeing the user-oriented choice for long or short term residential facilities and support policy for qualitative improvement of the facilities .

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 고등학교를 졸업하게 될 지적장애청소년을 자녀로 둔 어머니들의 양육경험을 탐색하고자 수행되었다. 이를 통하여 어머니들의 양육경험의 본질적인 의미를 좀 더 깊이 있게 이해하고자 하는 것이다. 또한 연구참여자들의 기술을 통해 규명되어진 양육경험의 본질을 토대로 지적장애청소년, 부모 특히 주 양육자인 어머니들에게 도움이 가능한 청소년복지의 실천적 방안을 위한 기초자료를 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다.
본 연구의 자료 수집은 2010년 11월부터 2011년 2월까지 1-3급의 지적장애청소년을 자녀로 둔 어머니 12명과의 심층인터뷰를 통해 이루어졌다. 자료분석은 Giorgi의 분석방법을 채택하여 연구참여자의 개별적 고유경험, 즉 상황적 의미구조와 함께 개별적 경험을 관통하는 일반적 경험의 본질과 구조를 도출해 내고자 하였다. 본 연구의 참여자 선정을 위한 표집방법으로는 기준에 의한 표집(criterion - based sampling)방법이 사용되었다.
자료 분석 결과, 연구참여자들의 기술로부터 총 1,025개의 의미단위가 만들어졌으며, 이를 토대로 총 4개의 구성요소와 25개의 하위구성요소가 도출되었다. 연구참여자들은 이시기의 자녀들을 양육하면서 자신들의 양육경험의 의미를 잘 드러내주었으며, 이는 청소년기에서 성인기로 접어드는 자녀를 양육하는 어머니의 심정을 이해하는 한편 그들을 위한 사회 복지적 개입의 필요성을 일깨워 주었다. 4개의 구성요소는 <오리무중(五里霧中) - 설 자리 없는 무대>, <칠전팔기(七顚八起) - 자녀를 위한 자리 찾기>, <암중모색(暗中摸索> - 나 혼자서는 할 수 없는 일>, <일신우일신(日新又日新) - 지금 보다 조금 더 나은 삶>이였으며 이를 일반적 구조로 요약하여 제시하면 다음과 같다.
연구참여자들은 지적장애를 가진 청소년기의 자녀들이 고등학교 졸업이라는 삶의 사건이 발생되는 지점을 전후로 졸업 후 진학이냐? 취업이냐? 혹은 시설로 갈 수 밖에 없는 현실적인 문제들을 직면(直面)함과 동시에 선택의 고민들을 하게 된다. 이러한 선택의 고민들은 고등학교를 졸업하는 자녀들이 자연적으로 지역사회 안이라는 삶의 무대에 정착하기 위한 자리가 여의치 않음을 인식하게 되는 결정적인 역할을 하게 된다. 따라서 양육자들은 자녀들이 생활할 수 있는 설 자리를 위해 동분서주하게 된다.
연구참여자들은 사회구조 체계와의 상호작용을 시도(試圖)하는 가운데 거듭되는 도전과 부딪힘 그리고 치열한 신경전 등의 과정을 거쳐나가면서 좀 더 다양하고 복잡한 지역사회로의 통합에 적절한 방법들을 선택하고 결정해나간다. 이러한 과정을 통하여 연구참여자들은 자녀를 위한 자리 찾기를 하게 된다. 지적장애를 가진 자녀들을 지역사회에 통합시키기 위한 연구참여자들의 질긴 모성애적 근성 이면에는 결코 나 혼자서는 할 수 없는 일임을 깨달아가는 세상살이의 경험들이 겹겹이 쌓여져 있다.
연구참여자들은 청소년기에서 성인기로 진입하는 이 시기가 성인기 이후 자녀들의 장기적인 삶이 이어지는 연장선임을 인식하면서 새로운 일터 마련 및 가족 내 고용 등의 내재적인 계획을 구상하게 된다. 아울러 장애자녀의 양육경험들이 또 다른 누군가에게는 희망이 되길 바라며 각자의 삶의 바람들을 동기화시키고 있었으며 지금보다는 조금 더 나은 삶에 대한 기대들을 구체화시키고 있었다.
결과적으로 본 연구는 청소년기에서 성인기로 들어서는 자립초기의 지적장애자녀를 양육하는 어머니의 경험을 상세히 제시함에 따라 이 시기의 어머니의 양육경험에 대한 의미를 새로이 부여하는 이론적 함의를 갖는다. 또한 평생대안학교를 통한 지속적인 서비스의 전달, 상담프로그램 제공 및 사례관리에 대한 협조체제구축, 1:1 맞춤형 서비스제공 프로그램개발 등의 실천적 접근과 함께 사회적 기업을 통한 일자리 창출 및 고용 현장 확대, 장애특례입학에 따른 졸업운영시스템 도입, 성년후견제도의 정착화, 장·단기적 거주 시설에 따른 이용자중심의 선택권 및 질적 향상을 보장하는 정책적 지원을 제언하였다.
