Yeongcheon was an important transportation hub in the Gyeongsangjwado area, bordering Gyeongju-bu and Daegu-jin. In particular, as Geumho River, a tributary of the Nakdong River, passed through Daegu and Yeongcheon, Yeongcheon was a very important base for internal defense with Daegu. Under the Ikgun system and Jingwan system, the local military system of Joseon, Yeongcheon was highlighted as an important base for inland defense. However, Yeongcheon lost its military position as a stronghold for the inland defense of Gyeongsangjwado as the military regime was changed to a strategy for Jeseung Bangryak(制勝方略) after Eulmyo Invasion. In the early days of the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, Yeongcheon was captured by the troops of Kato Kiyomasa, the 2nd Japanese Army, and a subsequent Japanese general was stationed in Yeongcheon Fortress. Since then, Kim Sung-il’s activities have led to the creation of righteous army in Gyeongsangwudo, and they have raised their majors in defeating Japanese troops stationed in Gyeongsangwudo. Meanwhile, Kwon Eung-soo, Jeong Se-ah, and Jeong Dae-im caused righteous army in Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangjwado. The Yeongcheon righteous army unit was officially approved by Kim Sung-il for the creation of righteous army and continued its full-fledged righteous army activities.
The righteous army unit of Yeongcheon, led by Kwon Eung-su, sent a proclamation to the surrounding area to encourage the merger, and led to the participation of the righteous army leader in the nearby area. With the joining of government generals, the organization and troops were more strengthened. In July 1592, the Yeongcheon righteous army began operations to recapture Yeongcheon Fortress, which was occupied by the Japanese army. The heads of the righteous army in Yeongcheon fully grasped the trends of the Japanese army in Yeongcheon Fortress based on their understanding of topography and geography. It also caused an agitation in the Japanese military by detonating gunpowder outside the fortress despite the lack of proper firearms. On July 27, 1592, the righteous army of Yeongcheon, led by Kwon Eung-su, redeemed Yeongcheon Fortress.
The battle of Yeongcheon Fortress is very important in the war situation of the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. First, it was the first battle to recapture the region that was taken away by the Japanese during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Second, it provided an opportunity for the creation and activities of righteous army in Gyeongsangjwado to be carried out in earnest. Third, it was a battle that disrupted the Japanese military's line of demarcation and damaged the Japanese occupation policy. As such, the Battle of Yeongcheon Fortress was enough to boost the morale of Joseon troops in Gyeongsangjwado, and was very important as a prelude to the recapture of Gyeongju Fortress, a stronghold of Gyeongsangjwado. With the retake of Yeongcheon Fortress, the military importance of Yeongcheon was highlighted again, and it became an important strategic point fo the defense of Gyeongsangjwado.
