Paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair(觀音ㆍ地藏竝立圖) are a type of Buddhist painting in which Avalokite?vara(觀音菩薩) and K?itigarbha(地藏菩薩) are drawn in parallel on the same picture plane. Cases of sculptures and paintings of Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha in parallel have appeared since the Tang Dynasty in China, but works produced in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods are left in Korea. Currently, there are total of 4 pieces of Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair paintings in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, three of which are possessed by Saifukuji(西福寺), Minami-Hokkeji(南法華寺), and Amyoin(阿名院) in Japan with one piece possessed by a Korean person.
The existing studies on paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair just focused on paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair in China and their production backgrounds, but not on those painting in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods. Thus, this paper takes a look at the origin of Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair paintings by examining sculpture records and the relation between the pure land belief and Bodhisattva with a ray of light, and investigates the unfolding process of paintings and sculptures of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair produced in the Tang and Song periods in China. Also, it analyzes the iconicography and stylistic characteristics of paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, and examines their production backgrounds with reference to the influence of China’s paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair, the Buddhist background, and the relation with the rite for salvation of the dead.
We can find the origin of Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair paintings from Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair sculptures that began to be created from the late seven century in China. In China, the works were produced over the periods of Tang and Song and most of them are left in stone caves. Their range of distribution was very wide from Dunhuang Grottos(敦煌石窟) in the Northern area through Longmen Grottos(龍門石窟) in the central region, to Sichuan Grottos(四川石窟) in the Southern part. And, an analysis of their sculpture records and their iconography tells us that prayer for relief in future life(來世) and reach for the Pure Land prevailed. Also, such a form of faith was combined with the Pure Land belief(淨土信仰) to give birth to the iconographies of Amit?bha Triad(阿彌陀三尊), Maitreya Triad(彌勒三尊), and Bhaisajyaguru Triad(藥師三尊).
On the other hand, with the Writings on the Miracles of the K?itigarbha Image(地藏菩薩像靈驗記), this paper examines a religious belief that called painting of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair Bodhisattva with a ray of light(放光菩薩), and prayed for benefits in this world(現世). It can be understood as another religious belief existing in relation with paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair.
We can find cases in which Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha appear together in painting works in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, from various Buddhas in paintings of Amit?bha Triad(阿彌陀三尊圖) and of Amit?bha with Eight Great Bodhisattvas(阿彌陀八代菩薩圖), and Descent of Amit?bha(阿彌陀來迎圖). However, there are only a few cases in which only Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha are expressed independently on a picture plane. Paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair can be divided into two types: one in which the two sacred figures are drawn on the same picture plane, and the other in which the two are expressed on different picture planes. The paintings possessed by Saijukuji and Amyoin in Japan and by a Korean person fall within the former type, and the painting possessed by Minami-Hokkeji in Japan the latter. Those 4 pieces of work fully inherit the styles of Goryeo’s Buddhist paintings. In particular, the work in Amyoin, which is assumed to be produced in the late Goryeo and the early Joseon periods, had not only patterns and compositions similar to Goryeo’s Buddhist paintings but also expressions that are difficult to find in the Goryeo period. As it fully inherits the iconographies of Goryeo’s Buddhist paintings and at the same time makes a novel attempt, this work well represents aspects of those Buddhist paintings in transitional period from late Goryeo to early Joseon.
Also, we can tell that there is a relation of influence between the four pieces of Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair painting and the painting of Amit?bha Triad possessed by a Japanese person as the iconography of the former is very similar to the appearance of K?itigarbha in the latter. In particular, the painting possessed by Saijukuji and the painting of Amit?bha Triad even seem to be drawn on the basis of the same example except detailed patterns expressed on Kasaya and Shawl and the distance between Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha.
In this way, the fact that the paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair follow the iconography of the painting of Amit?bha Triad tells us that their background of creation is related with the belief of the Amit?bha Pure Land. Late Goryeo and early Joseon were periods in which the state was in chaos due to interference by Yuan, Red-Hood bandits’ and Wakou’s invasions, and difficult life due to drought. Thus, in those periods, future life beliefs were developed that prayed for the repose of the dead and their rebirth in the Pure Land(極樂往生). That is to say, based on the fact that China’s painting of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair were produced mainly for memorial services for the dead, Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha were established as important sacred figures in future life and Pure Land beliefs in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, rituals were held since the middle Goryeo period that made prominent the posthumous providential characteristics of Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha, Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha appeared together in manuals for funeral rituals, and the iconographies of the four paintings are almost identical to that of the painting of Amit?bha Triad possessed by a Japanese person, we can tell that the creation of paintings of the Avalokite?vara and K?itigarbha pair in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods is for memorial services(追善) and funeral rituals for the dead.
