From the earthenware for ritual services excavated in the fortresses of Hansung-Baekje Period in Gyeonggi Province, we can assume that ritual services frequently happened in a fortress. This paper reviewed the possibility that a fortress might work as a place for religious rites through the traces of ritual services shown through the earthenware. In order to figure out the characteristics of earthenware for ritual services, this paper reviewed the common patterns of the earthenware excavated in the fortresses. Traces of the excavated ritual services are classified into buried eathernware and disposed ones, considering that they were treated after completion of a ritual serivce. As for the buried, this study investigated with the earthenware buried in a hollow pit by classifying them into two purposes the buried for disposal after a ritual service was done and the buried for preservation to be used again for a next ritual service. Earthenware used in a ritual service could to be damaged entirely or partially after its use. In that case, they were disposed in a pit through cracking or crushing, or dumped down a fortress wall, water flow ditch, or a gate. Such purpose of intentional damage of earthenware used for ritual services was known to maintain the sacredness. Next, the main types of earthenware for ritual services were classified into the dishes for serving food for a ritual service and the dishes for preserving food, and they include candle plates, three-leg plates, mounted dishes, jars with a short neck, potteries, bottles, and cup-type earthenware. Through the traces remained on earthenware such as pattern, sign, mark, damage by striking, and perforation, this study inferred the correlation of earthenware with ritual services. Bird foot patterns, which were a representative earthenware pattern of Baekje Kingdom, were connected with agricultural ritual services as bird foot patterns in ancient times symbolized harvest. Perforation in mounted dishes or inscribing symbols in various parts by pressing or with lines show the properties of ritual services. In addition to that, a grip of a steamer, disk-type earthenware, and spindle wheels were assumed to have been used as personal things for daily ritual services, changed from their original functions. On the other hand, in the fortresses in Gyeoggi area, few ritual services were excavated such as eastern horse dolls, small-sized imitations, and mirrors. Traces of ritual services were observed in the Hansung-style earthenware of Baekje Kingdom. It was assumed because Gyeonggi area was under the direct control of Hansung, and ritual services were served by the commission of the central government. In sum, there is high possibility that fortresses of Hansung-Baekje Period in Gyeonggi area served multiple functions as a ritual service place, as well as for national defense.
