미술치료사의 수퍼비전 체험연구 = Heurmeneutic phenomenological understanding on lived experience supervision of art therapist

This qualitative research used a hemeneutic phenomenological approach to discover meaning in the art therapist 's experience of Supervision. The goal of this study was to dicover the essence of the supervision experiences of art therapists. There isn't yet a solid academic foundation for art therapy in our country, and the attempt by this study to shed light on supervision experienced by art therapists is expected to help pave the way for the development of art therapy supervision tailored to the specificity of this field.
To find out the essential meaning of supervision underwent by art therapists, van Manen's heurmeneutic phenomenology was applied. The subjects in this study were 10 selected art therapists who gained a master's degree in art therapy and served as art therapists for three to seven years. They continued to be supervised and hoped to participate in this study. The Data were collected by using intense interviews and observations from March 2007 to May 2009. The contents of the interviews were tape - recorded and their essential themes were drawn by using 'line by line' approach of reflection.
At this stage, the researcher referred to the origins of the words, idioms, literary and art works to enhance the insight and understanding of the experiences of the participants.
Through this process, the following 7 essential themes and sub-themes of the experience emerged.
The first essence is "looking for help in a state of exhaustion and confusion". The art therapists realized that education of two years was not long enough to ensure a successful job performance. They got to lay blame on external circumstances and spent a lot of time being discouraged.
The second essence is "finding someone to lean on at last". They found someone to rely on after they led a confusing life as art therapists, and they found power in themselves as well, which they hadn't recognize at all. They came to open themselves in a warm, stable and trustworthy atmosphere, which gave them a boost.
The third essence is "Regarding admiring the supervisors". The supervisors they found were the only people who helped them get out of the troubles, and they expected too much from the supervisors. They wanted to model after them and fluttered with a new hope.
The fourth essence is "to supervising to the supervisors". The supervisors run counter to their overexpectations, which was a bitter disappointment to them. Such a negative experience stirred up their sense of shame and forced them to be skeptical about supervision.
The fifth essence is "For finding the delight of art therapy". They came to recognize the limits of their own and of art therapy, and they rather realized what they could do when they admitted their own limits.
The sixth essence is "Trying to beyond art therapy". They strived to cast away their own narrow view of the medium of art. They had taken a specific view of art based on their own past experience, but they came to see art and art materials in a new light and marveled at art and human expressiveness.
The seventh essence is "Concerning finding oneself to grow".They looked back on themselves and what initially urged them to be convinced of art therapy and to study it. Although it was very time-consuming and painstaking to take themselves to another level, they found all the experiences to be very worthwhile.
The result of the study are expected to build the groundwork for having a sociocultural and academic understanding of the supervision experiences of art therapists and to make a contribution to actualizing superb art therapy supervision tailored to the specificity of this area.
