1950년대 『기독교사상』의 창간과 그 방향 = Founding and Direction of 『The Christian Thought』 in 1950s

This study began because of interest in why 『The Christian Thought』appeared in South Korea in the 1950s. The background of the appearance of 『The Christian Thought』 despite the economic difficulties was not because of anti-communist feeling, but rather because communism needed to be defeated. The division of Mysticism and the Church as a problem of fundamentalist theologians who are opposed to liberal theology was criticized and there was an opinion that they were responsible for all of the problems of the Church in Korea. Fundamentalism emphasizing eternal life and individualism was separated from South Korea which made people concerned that anti-Christian people would support communism. There were opinions that were not just against communists, but rather that communism needed to be defeated. The reason behind this was that, while the church was deeply involved in the problems of society, it held the position that communism must be rooted out. People recognized that Korean Christendom could not cope with the communism as it was based on blind faith, separated from society and emphasizing eternal life and individualism. Thus, for defeating communism, Korean Christendom most needed theological development. Since all of the problems of the Korean church stemmed from a lack of theological training, 『The Christian Thought』 fulfilled its role faithfully: It would be difficult for Christianity to survive in Korea if many people leave and reject the church and become sympathetic to communism, because of its deep interest in social issues. Therefore, the most important problem lay in theological training and 『The Christian Thought』 was in charge of solving the problem. Its founders emphasized that aggressive propaganda and practice of democracy could overcome this problem. From then on, 『The Christian Thought』 has played an important role as a magazine providing the theoretical foundation of the democratization movement of Korean society.
