Ernst Barlach, the outstanding German sculptor of the Expressionist Movement, concentrated himself to explore the human nature, taking the origin and the whereabouts of human life into the forcus of his investigation.
Ernst Barlach, who was a dramatist as well as a sculptor, belong to the first generation of Expressionists. The characteristic of Balach's art that can be distinguished from those of other expressionists is massiveness, which comes from both form and content the heavy figural forms of his sculpture are rooted in North German peasant life.
His draftsmanship as a sculptor is more pronounced and more remakable in wood then in any other material. It probably comes from his watching of many wood carving in rural medieval churches since his youth. Therefore the Gothic art of North Germany had a great effect on Barlach's sculpture.
He felt much afflicted by destinies of suffering people, and such an afflicted gave rise to his passion of creation. Finally he could complete the beauty of his own form after his long years of struggles and disappointments with works, and various efforts.
Born by country-doctor father and mentally-diseased mother, Barlach was naturally sensitive. In his imaginative childhood, he came to realize the dual structure of body and spirit through his father's job as a doctor. And by seeing the spirit through his father's job as a doctor. And by seeing the suffering patient, he felt early that living is the tragic strife of life. It was his deep interest of the truth hidden by the realities that drew his attention at that time. He had unlimited passion to search the nature covered up by external shapes.
He could not fulfill the desire of his own expressing in the Dresden Art Academy from 1891 to 1895. For 10 more years in Paris and Berlin after graduation, he tried to find his own expressing only to fail, and used to lose himself in deep despair. Then his wist to Russia for 2 months of Aug. and Sep. in 1906, a really an expected accident, gave him a decisive opportunity to realize his art. After noticing the last limit of human's miserableness through the vastness of Russian prairie, the wretched lives of people there, and their losing humanities, he was able to recover his reliance again by the courage for new life. Without hesitating, he began to formalize the image which had filled the inside of him after returning form there. And, he began to progress the dualism of human existence, which at that time he fully understood, through a volition to rise above. After World War I, such a volition to rise above leaned to the religion and, therefore, many religious monuments were made by him.
Barlach's such works about the agony of human existence was expelled from all museums since 1933 the year which Nazistarted the rule of his country. And his activities in Art were also banned. Therefore, his last years came to be miserable but he continued his lone work against the Nazi's gradually increasing pressure being treated contemptuously like aliens.
Barlach adopted the simplicity in technique. His sculptural figures are almost flat except for face, hands and feet. Barlach always insisted that the outware appearance of a man be only a mask. Thus he had to look behind it. He wanted to show what he felt and sensed rather than what he actually saw.
Sometimes, his figure appears to be a block. It is due to his belief that the depiction of detail might hide the essence of a human being. This is the stylistic feature of Barlach's sculpture . Gradually the 20th century sculpture theded to deny the mass and volume.
He looked upon life ad an endless process of suffering. For him, suffering is not to be overcome ,but to be combined with human existence. His figures do not appear to try to avoid and to transcend suffering. They seem to endure and accept it. we get the impression that they always strive to reach a better life and to attain their better self in spite of despair and solitude. This point of view comes from Barlach's conviction that all human beings have an image of God. The symbol of human situation which Barlach suggested points to a man who simultaneously belongs to heaven and earth.
Bralach was always absorbed in the relationship between God and man. Such a metaphysical tendency was very rare in Expressionism. But the miserable and destructive experience of World War I led the whole generation of Europeans to ask about the beginning and the end of human suffering and existence.
Thus Barlach wanted to elevate the consciousness of his contemporary men to a new metaphysical height and arouse an inner revolution in them. That is why the most of his figures look to the sky. This metaphysical pursuit is, I believe the new aspect of Expressionism after World War I .
His Art form gave that time's Germany which was chaotic in sculpture, the opportunity of Expressionism, new Art form at that times, and also gave morden sculpture the subjective expression of emotions thereafter.
