The ultimate goal of teaching Korean for academic purposes is to help foreign students with their academic achievement in their major fields of study. The goal is closely linked to Korean learners’ needs or language education related to their major, which has consistently been raised since the early 2000s. To meet these needs, the curriculum for specific academic purposes conducted in Korean should be empirically studied and verified using various methods. In this study, I developed a curriculum for specific academic purposes conducted in Korean for international students majoring in business administration at S University, Seoul. I verified the curriculum’s effectiveness through the implementation and evaluation of the course to propose a direction for developing curriculum in Korean for specific academic purposes that can be used in the classroom. The suggestions made in this study apply a modified Adjunct Language Instruction (ALI) model that assumes minimal cooperation and where the language instructor receives a syllabus from the content instructor.
The curriculum development process and the results of this study can be summarized as follows:
Needs Analysis: I conducted a survey and situation analysis for 17 first-year students majoring in business administration at S University during the second semester of 2019 on the learners’ need for the Korean language for their major. The results indicated it would be most desirable to integrate the courses by function for academic purposes and the Korean language education courses as concentrations under the major. More specifically, it was found appropriate to apply a modified Adjunct Language Instruction (ALI) method, based on “reading for academic purposes,” and to organize major subject classes after language classes.
Curriculum Design: I then established the categories of syllabus contents that reflect the result of the learners’ needs survey and situation analysis and the principles of the Content-Based Instruction (CBI) and reading curriculum. The designed syllabus integrates the reading strategy-oriented technical syllabus and the task-oriented syllabus based on the subject and content syllabus, with the addition of the vocabulary and grammar syllabus. Next, I reviewed the syllabus of “Principles of Business Administration” to set goals for each syllabus category and select the content for teaching vocabulary, grammar, and reading strategies. For the educational content under vocabulary and grammar, I built a corpus from the texts in the major field and utilized it. For vocabulary, Chinese characters that can be used as verbs and nouns, were selected as “keywords for education,” among terms used in the major. The frequency of these terms in the major’s text, the overlap of the educational vocabulary, the possibility of inference of Chinese roots (ease of learning), and word formation ability were considered in the selection process. For grammar, grammatical element-related markers, were analyzed for selection from the text-structure markers, considering that grammar education should aid students’ comprehension of texts in the major and learn expressions required in the academic community. For reading strategies, I analyzed existing studies and the suggested strategies in textbooks relating to reading for academic purposes, selecting appropriate strategies primarily related to “literal comprehension” and “inferential comprehension.” Finally, the curriculum developed in this study integrates the courses by function for academic purposes and the Korean language education course as concentrations. The curriculum was divided into two parts by the midterm; the educational materials and teaching/learning model were developed focusing on the learning and practice of individual reading strategies before the midterm, and on the comprehensive practice of individual strategies after the midterm.
Curriculum Implementation: The final process involved the implementation of the curriculum. This was divided into the first draft and the revision of the curriculum, for a total of 8 weeks for 22 freshmen in the second semester of the 2020 academic year. After the first draft curriculum was implemented, I conducted surveys and interviews to reflect the findings in the follow-up curriculum. After all curriculum were completed, a final draft of the curriculum was prepared.
The results of evaluating the curriculum for specific academic purposes applying the ALI model can be summarized as follows:
First, the respondents stated that the curriculum for specific academic purposes conducted in Korean applying the ALI model had a positive influence on “acquiring knowledge of the major.”Regarding the modified curriculum which was implemented after the midterm, more students reported a positive influence, citing the effect of sparking interest in and easing anxiety about major subjects. The class satisfaction survey also indicated positive results about the “Adjunct Language Instruction (ALI) effect”; 20 students, or 95%, said they were “very satisfied” or “satisfied,” implying a high level of satisfaction.
Second, it was confirmed that this curriculum could have a positive effect on “improving Korean language competence.” The ex-ante and ex-post Korean proficiency tests, conducted before and after the implementation of the curriculum, confirmed that it contributed to the improvement of the respondents’ Korean reading skills.
Third, “Key Vocabulary for Education,” “Text-structure Markers (Grammar),” “Reading Strategies,” and “Collaborative Reading Activities,” selected as educational content, were found to be appropriate for the curriculum developed in this study.
Fourth, The “New Vocabulary Preview”(are presented with related language informations **which are divided into basic vocabulary, basic academic vocabulary, and specialized vocabulary for each chapter) and “Preview for Collaborative Reading Activities” can be a burden to students. Nevertheless it was observed that respondents perceived them positively and actively participated in the activities and assignments.
Fifth, the use of textual material from the major for Korean language education proved to be helpful. In total, 19 students, or 90%, reported satisfaction with the learning materials; the material was also perceived positively by the instructors, as a corpus was built from the textual material from the major and used to select the contents and develop course material.
Sixth, the learners’ needs for a curriculum for specific academic purposes were consistently represented as a needs for “vocabulary,” “basic knowledge of the major,” and “reading.” However, the level of perception regarding the need for “reading” was considerably higher in the assessment of the modified curriculum.
Seventh, it was found that four students, or about 19%, did not view the curriculum positively with regard to achieving class goals. There was little change in the proportion of students who negatively perceived the first draft curriculum and the modified curriculum assessment. This indicates the lower the language proficiency of the students, the more likely they are to perceive the major class and major subjects being in Korean as burdensome, which may negatively affect their academic adjustment.
Eighth, the learners were observed to have difficulties with basic knowledge, reading, and vocabulary in major classes conducted in Korean. As the curriculum proceeded, the perceived difficulty regarding vocabulary and grammar decreased, while the perceived difficulty regarding reading, speaking, listening, writing, and basic knowledge of the major increased.
Ninth, for class satisfaction, face-to-face classes (classroom) and online classes (Zoom) showed a significant difference. For face-to-face classes (classroom), 19 students, or 90%, provided a positive evaluation, while for online classes (Zoom), only 15 students, or 72%, reported that they were satisfied.
The educational implications of these findings for the curriculum in Korean for specific academic purposes can be summarized as follows:
First, the curriculum in Korean for specific academic purposes can be effective when focused on “specificity” related to major subjects, unlike the curriculum in Korean for general academic purposes. This “specificity” is associated with the specific areas or needs of learners, implying that the “specific subject of the major” can become more desirable than the “subjects related to the major” and “Adjunct Language Instruction (ALI)” more desirable than “Theme-Based Instruction.” From this perspective, I developed a modified ALI model where Korean classes are designed according to the syllabus of the content instructors.
Second, the modified ALI model suggested in this study could be an alternative to the current Korean curriculum for specific academic purposes, which can be applied in the classroom. Although the ALI model was modified due to the limitations of the education environment, a majority of the students reported positively regarding its effectiveness.
Third, it is effective to design a curriculum in Korean for specific academic purposes that applies the ALI model centered around “reading.” Based on the minimal cooperation between the content and language instructors regarding sharing a “syllabus,” this curriculum can be highly feasible in the classroom situation and can cover “basic vocabulary of the major” and “basic knowledge of the major,” which is the principal needs of learners. The fact that the level of perception about the need for “reading” was considerably higher in the assessment of the revised curriculum can be seen as the result of learners perceiving the effectiveness of “reading-based classes” for acquiring “vocabulary” and “basic knowledge of the major.”
Fourth, it is useful to organize the textual materials from the major into a corpus and use them as basic materials for teaching language in terms of learning the language and curriculum development. The students showed high satisfaction with the educational materials and active task engagement, which implies the usefulness of constructing this corpus. Additionally, since it is practical for the instructor to organize the textual materials into a corpus and use it as basic materials, developing teaching materials for major classes in Korean based on this corpus is recommended.
Fifth, for learners with a low proficiency in Korean, the special academic Korean classes may increase the burden of learning; hence, it is necessary to design a curriculum taking this aspect into account. In this study, the curriculum was divided into two stages keeping these points in mind. It was organized according to the stages and the same level of vocabulary was repeatedly presented. However, about 20% of the students did not respond positively to the achievement of class objectives and the proportion of those who answered negatively showed almost no change in the assessment of the curriculum that was implemented for the first time and the revised one. This suggests that the leaner’s language proficiency should be taken into consideration more carefully when designing a curriculum for Korean language for special academic purposes.
In this study, I proposed a modified ALI model based on the minimal cooperation between the language instructor and content instructor, focused on the fact that the ALI model has not been actively used due to the limitation in cooperation between language and content instructors, despite it being an ideal model for a language education curriculum designed for specific academic purposes. Additionally, we set the language education categories for implementation in the classroom by planning, implementing, and evaluating the developed curriculum according to the general process of developing a language curriculum. The significance of this study lies in that it was designed based on the most realistic model that can be applied in the classroom, the design procedure was identified in detail, and the effectiveness was verified through the evaluation.
