This paper attempts to explore the relationship between the “Landscapes of Seoul,” which was published serially in the Dong-A Ilbo (Dong-A Daily Newspaper) in 1935, and the city image of Gyeongseong in the mid-1930s. The “Landscapes of Seoul” is composed of illustrations by the eminent artist Yi Ma-dong (1906-1980) and writings by Seo Hang-seok (1900-1985) and Sin Nam-cheol (1907-1958). There are two main points of focus in this study. Firstly, the growing interest in the urban space and visual culture of Gyeongseong was heightened when the “Landscapes of Seoul” was published. Secondly, the “Landscapes of Seoul” was published in the form of newspaper illustrations based on the premise of readers. The most popular themes for Koreans were chosen and dealt with in the “Landscapes of Seoul.” Therefore, the main focus of this essay is to examine that the “Landscapes of Seoul,” serialized in the form of newspaper illustrations, was a portrait of the city in the middle of the 1930s when interest in the city and art markedly increased.
In the mid-1930s, Gyeongseong called Dae-Gyeongseong (Great Gyeongseong) and the area of Gyeongseong expanded. The urban space of Gyeongseong was considered a huge spectacle. The royal palaces symbolizing Hanseong, the old capital city of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1897), were turned into representative amusement parks in Gyeongseong. The department store, symbolic of the modern city of Gyeongseong, was established as the center of urban culture. The situation was also frequently dealt with in the newspapers. The newspaper was one of the most popular visual media. Theserialization of the novel was a powerful strategy to attract readers’ attention. Novel illustrations painted by prominent artists of the time played a key role in creating the urban images of Gyeongseong. Along with novel illustrations, newspaper illustrations in the mid-1930s gained enormous popularity. The “Landscapes of Seoul” exploring the urban space of Gyeongseong under the title of Seoul is one of the most unusual works of art.
The “Landscapes of Seoul” is a collaborative work consisting of illustrations and writings published for about a month between June and July 1935. Yi Ma-dong drew illustrations and wrote the first four episodes. From the fifth to the 13th episodes, Yi drew illustrations and Seo Hang-seok and Sin Nam-cheol wrote episodes, while the other two episodes only featured Yi Madong’s illustrations. The characteristics of the work are the following. Firstly, the places covered in the work are limited to the Bukchon (Northern Village) area. Namchon (Southern Village), the urban center of Gyeongseong, was excluded. Secondly, the perception of urban space is demonstrated, as seen in modern buildings, asphalt roads, and utility poles that are considered to symbolize modern cities. Thirdly, the places that appear on popular postcards are differently depicted in the “Landscapes of Seoul.” The selection and exclusion of sites in the “Landscapes of Seoul” are similar to visual media such as postcards. Both newspaper illustrations and postcards played an important role in the diffusion and proliferation of urban images of Geyongseong. The “Landscapes of Seoul,” aimed to attract readers’ attention, shows how the urban city of Gyeongseong looked and how the visual images of the modern city appealed to the public. The use of the name Seoul, not Gyeongseong, however, important in understanding the “Landscapes of Seoul.” It was not easy to find the remaining traces of the old city of Seoul in the mid-1930s. As the modern city of Gyeongseong rapidly developed, old villages and monuments all disappeared. What represented the old capital city of Seoul vanished. Nostalgia for the old city emerged in the mid-1930s. Therefore, the “Landscapes of Seoul” is a portrait of Gyeongseong which was overlapped with the fragmented memories of Koreans about the old city. Both the present ...
