This article aims to shed new light on Choi Jaeseo’s “Matsurou Literature,” -published in National Literature(Gug- Min-Mun-Hag) in April 1944, This article thereby interprets the logic and literary meaning of becoming a nation through theories of national literature. "Matsurou" means serving the Japanese emperor. Choi’s essay has been read either as a ritique on the so-called surrender or conversion to Japan, or as a reflection of his discontinued stance as a critic, i.e., his limit of theorization. While taking these contrasting views into consideration, this article suggests that Choi’s paper does not reveal "the limit of his theorization" but rather the limit of the theory of Kokutai(the national polity). In fact, the theory of Kokutai is not fully formed and contains contradictions in logic. Furthermore, his work regarding subjectivization strived to place himself permanently in the arena of literature, which enables us to explore its limits. Lastly, this study revolves around three ideas:nation-blood, ideology-Kokutai, and subjectivization-performativity.
Aside from whether the theory of national literature plays a role in the formation of a nation, for Korean writers involved in National Literature, establishing a conscription system led to dramatic progress in the subjectivization of becoming a nation. Choi is certainly no exception. The conscription project discloses aspects of his transformation to becoming of the nation, which comes to fruition when he finally accepts the idea that it is an illusion, as Korea veterans fought for Japan to bring about national completion. Hence, becoming a nation starts anew only through becoming "the Matsurou nation", whereby Korean people are expected to recover their lost status as a nation.
The process of "the Matsurou nation" is completed through conscious adoption of Kokutai, the universal ideology of the Japanese empire. Unlike the Japanese who were born into this ideology of Kokutai, Korean people had to understand it in theoretically because the ideology of Kokutai, could not come to them naturally. However, the very fact that only a theoretical understanding of the ideology of Kokutai enables Korean people to adopt it determines they are not Japanese. This indicates their critical loss because Kokutai, is nothing but the natural manifestation of the Japanese mind beyond theory.
For Choi, the issue of constructing a race symbolized by blood, the essence of the ideology of Kokutai, is obviously what prevents Korean people from being Japanese in every respect. In turn, he attempts to overcome this ultimate hindrance through homogeneity of imperial Japan and colonial Korea. He takes advantage of Korean student soldiers as a vehicle to recall the ancient past in order to stress the national community where Korea welds Japan together. Nevertheless, his attempt is doomed to fail because this historical viewpoint that Korea and Japan originated from the same root completely negates the essence of being "Japaness". Accordingly, the otherized being situated outside the boundary of nation comes to realize the disability to be Japanese, which leads to the choice of becoming "the Matsurou nation". In other words, the choice refers to the "performance" of a nation at will. In fact, “Mausurou Literature” is the text that reflects the performativity of becoming a nation. This performativity encourages the adoption of the ideology of Kokutai, thereby disclosing the contradiction of Kokutai. In short, becoming a as presented in "national literature" is the work of subjectivization oriented to performing an action, which associates and interacts with the literary practice of Choi’s literary practice.
Universalist discourse of the empire and the empire system per se results in the logic of becoming the nation from Choi. In this sense, his logic is able to evolve where universalism goes extreme. Furthermore, the categorization of the universal as a personal desire to become ...
