This essay reconstructs the concept of solidarity by being based on the human ontological condition of vulnerability. Solidarity is often regarded as homogeneous with justice, the ethics of symmetry. Rational justice and compassionate solidarity are formed through interactions between beings of symmetry. In this regard, justice and solidarity belong to the ethics and politics of symmetry. However, unlike rational justice, solidarity centers on compassion for the other, and the sensitivity of solidarity compassion centers on the particularity rather than the generality of the other. Solidarity is primarily concerned with other people’s wounds and vulnerabilities, and by considering this priority, the other of solidarity, justice, can guarantee the rationality and universality of solidarity. Because, both solidarity and justice have a symmetrical character, solidarity and justice reveal limitations on the ethical-political relationship with asymmetric beings. Therefore, this paper justifies the reason why the concept of wound-sensitive solidarity should not be sensitive only to the symmetrical, emphasizing the reason why solidarity should open to the asymmetry in order to restore the origin of asymmetry which established the first solidarity. This approach will reveal the authenticity of solidarity. To this end, this paper focuses on the vulnerabilities of asymmetric beings through the concept and history of “trauma,”and traces the process by which trauma has actually reconstructed existing solidarity and created new solidarity. In this sense, trauma is the authority of the vulnerable to command the expansion of existing solidarity. Previously, I have defined the tension of publicness that the authority of the asymmetric imposes on the symmetric publicness (the publicness of rational consensus and the publicness of compassionate solidarity) as the critical publicness. In this paper, I apply tension to the concept of ‘critic’ and divide the stages of critic into two. In one hand, there are the critic (the secondary criticism) as objection (counterargument) and antipathy between symmetric beings, and in the other hand, there are the critic (the primary critic and the critical critic) raised by asymmetric beings. The primary critic is a coercive power of the asymmetric that fundamentally rejects the existing solidarity and justice. This criticality doesn’t function in the existing publicness of communicational consensus and interactional compassion, but it has the coercive power to force new communication and compassion. It is the power which transfers the fundamental impossibility of understanding and compassion to the possibility. This power to urge translation, understanding, and compassion is bound to open up existing solidarity. Therefore, while solidarity is maintained by protecting symmetry beings, it is justified by giving hospitality to new asymmetric beings. In doing so, the homogeneous justice with solidarity can be more universal and more just. Thus there is no solidarity and no justice, if they don’t presuppose hospitality.
