This paper aims to examine the formal and semantic characteristics of the chiko construction in terms of construction grammar in order to clarify that the meaning revealed by chiko is not the meaning of the vocabulary of chiko but rather the meaning of the chiko construction. The findings of this paper are as follows. First, the chiko construction is divided into two: the one that means ‘Unexceptionality’(U construction) and the one that means ‘Rarity’(R construction). The two constructions have in common that the preceding phrase of chiko forms a set and the elements belonging to it have some properties. In this sense, the chiko construction can be called ‘Set-Element Property Construction’. Second, the U construction is used in the form of ‘Xchiko[set-element]+Y[entity with a property]+Z[existential negation]’ and indicates the meaning of ‘all elements in the set X have not(Z) the property Y’, resulting in ‘all elements belonging to a set have a general and prototypical property’. The U construction has a fixed word order, usually appears as chiko, and has a restriction that a negative word should be used as a predicate, but it also allows non-negative elements such as tumwulta. This is an example of the coercion that the construction overrides the verb. Since the construction itself is strongly related to the negative context, tumwulta, which is semantically indicative of existential negative, although not a negative word, can be used in the U construction. Third, the R construction formally appears as ‘Y[element]+Xchiko(nun)[set]+Z[property]’, and semantically means ‘one of the elements(Y) belonging to the set X has an unusual and non-prototypical property(Z) compared to the general and prototypical property of other elements’. The R construction is relatively free of word order, is usually expressed as chikonun, and use a gradable predicate. Although there is no expression in the sentence that reveals the general and prototypical property of the set evoked by the preceding phrase of chiko, the fact that this meaning is revealed in the sentence indicates that this meaning is united throughout the construction. Fourth, the introduction of the construction, defined as a ‘pair of form and meaning’, can adequately explain the phenomenon of form and meaning mismatch. The focus particles, a paradigmatic marker, represent a semantic relationship between its preceding phrases and other entities realized or unrealized in a sentence, so that they are formally bound to their preceding phrases but semantically exceed those. The chiko construction is a construction that indicates the general and prototypical or unusual and non-prototypical property of elements belonging to a set evoked by the preceding phrase of chiko, and this meaning is not by the word of chiko but by the whole construction. Fifth, it is difficult to know how and when the particle chiko was grammaticalized from the verb chita and how the two chiko constructions were formed, but it was confirmed by investigating the 19th and 20th century literature that the chiko construction had already been established as a construction at that time, and there was a time when the U construction and the R construction co-existed in competition with each other. Considering the fact that the two constructions are formally and semantically related and the U construction has more traces of the verb chita, the most likely hypothesis is that the R construction would have diverged directly from the U construction. While the two constructions were competing, chikoto appeared for a while and its usage quickly disappeared. The chikoto was used in the context of one element of a set having common properties, but more prominent or additional properties. In the process for the chiko, chikonun, and chikoto to form each constructions, the chiko and chikonun fixed as a form of the U construction and the R construction respectively, whereas the chikoto disappeared without forming its own construction.
