Shakespeare's last play The Tempest has not been treated by critics as pure comedy. The First Folio classified it as comedy but some recent editions include it as a romance. H.B. Charlton refused to discuss Shakespeare's "last plays" include The Tempest in his book entitled Shakespearean Comedy because "as comedies, they are of little accord." Brockbank regards it as a "multiple, complex allegory", while David William concludes that The Tempest is "the noblest of the revenge plays".
The Tempest, with its philosophical and allegorical meanings, as well as its biographical overtones as some of the critics have pointed out, is not an easy piece of dramatic work to classify simply as a comedy or a tragedy. But as it is a complex play, various interpretations can be made.
The writer of this paper attempts to took at this play as a romantic comedy, more inclined toward comedy than romance.
The writer of this paper attempts to look at this play as a romantic comedy, more inclined toward comedy than romance. The Tempest has been studied throughout years from various view points and approaches but little or no analysis has been made on the play as a comedy per se, as far as the present writer could see.
After the introductory remarks, a short study of romantic comedy in general follows, as to its chief characteristics and some differences form an ordinary comedy. The main portion of the paper, of course, deals with the play itself with an attempt to enumerate various, if not standard, comic devices Shakespeare used to make this particular play a comedy above all else.
Of the various comic device found in the play, the present writer regards four elements as contributing most to making it a comedy.
They are: a) the device of dramatic irony, the whole play being surrounded with an ironic situation of audience-knowledge and character-ignorance; b) comic exposition and comic mood; and c) the comic trio of the sub-plot.
Throughout this paper, an attempt has been made to trace a comic pattern employed by comedy writers of the past and, to a certain extent, succeeds in finding one in The Tempest. In spite of everything, Shakespeare, at the end of his career, may have written the play as a big game, a fairy tale to be accepted lightly by his audience, and a comedy to laugh over.
