김동리 소설 <역마>의 구조시학적 연구 = A Study on Structural Poetics of Kim Dong-ri's short story, <Yuk-ma>

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 김동리의 단편소설 〈역마〉를 구조시학적 방법론으로 분석하였다. 분석의 기본 틀은 체사레 세그레 (Ceasare Segre)의 층위이론을 차용하여, 언술(言述)(discourse), 플롯〈plot〉, 파블라(fabula)의 차원에서 살펴보았다.
김동리 소설의 언술은 매우 다양하다. 〈역마〉에 나타난 언술 형태는 언술 유형의 반복과 교차에 의한 역동성, 상징성, 그리고 구성의 안정성을 보여준다. 이와 함께 시적 기능이 탁월한 언술이 많고 사실자체보다 그것을 제시하는 언어의 정서적 환기 효과가 중요시되는 경향이 있으며, 서술자의 존재는 전지적 시점을 유지하고 그 결과 완전한 場面의 유형에 속한 언술이 드물다. 또한 서술자의 주관적 판단이 작용하고, 인물의 극한적 심리상태는 행동자체에 의해 '보여주기(showing)'보다는 서술자의 언술을 통해 '말하기(telling)'로 표현되고 있다. 작가는 이와 같은 언술상의 특징을 이야기되는 인물의 운명적 삶에 개연성을 부여하여 보편적으로 수긍할 수 있는 문학적 장치로 사용하고 있다.
작품 〈역마〉의 의미구조는 '원형구성'을 취하고 있다. 이는 작품에 나타난 인물들의 행위와 그들의 운명과의 관계가 시간적, 공간적 배경 속에서 예시되고 실현되는 모티프 A→B의 과정을 통해 나타난다. 모티프 A가 개연성 있는 언술을 통해 모티프 B로 귀결되는 과정을 독자로 하여금 납득케 하기 위해 설정된 매개적 사건들은 작품의 구조 속에 정보를 주는 징조단위로 작용한다. 또한 이를 위해 작가는 공간적 배경이나 주인공의 환경 등을 상징적으로 사용한다.
인간과 자연 사이에는 '유기적 관련'이 있다는 것을 전제로 작품 속에서 전통적 동양정신을 구현해내고자 했던 김동리의 관심은 〈역마〉에서는 사주라는 민간신앙을 채택하고, 사주에 따르는 개인의 운명은 벗어나기 어렵다는 속신을 보여주기 위해서 사용하는 장치들은 소설의 핍진성(逼眞性)을 더해 준다. 주인공 성기의 삶은 '역마살'이라는 속신을 서두에 암시, 예고(Premonition)하는 형태로 제시되어 결국 주인공이 운명에 순응하여 떠나는 결말을 취함으로써 전조된 운명의 기미를 실현(realization)하는 것으로 나타난다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis is to study Kim Dong-ri's 〈Yuk-ma〉on the basis of structural poetics. The method of this study is based on the theory of Ceasare Segre's four levels of narrative structure. He divided structure of work into four levels, discourse, plot, fabula, narrative model. It is to describe scientifically the complexity of the meaning of novel. And this study intends to describe the generality of the structure of meaning by searching out a novelist's characteristic technique.
In 〈Yuk-ma〉, the destiny of a hero is prescribed its meaning from the source of a certain marginal belief in the cultural system of modern Korea. To make the unusualness and surrealistic feature plausible, various narrative techniques are employed.
In the level of plot and fabula, the model, motif A (static motif)→ motif B (dynamic motif) is showed. Motif A is a certain premonition which will occur in the future, and motif B is a realization of premonition in hero's life. The destiny of a hero A is realized in the form of B. In the process of plot and fabula, medieval event is to rationalize the process of A→B in the universal order of human destiny, the hero's character never changes. Pastness is fell on the presentness by the discourse of scenic summary. Forefather's life is repeated at descendant's life. In 〈Yuk-ma〉, hero's vagabond life is a certain heritage of that of his father. In his approach to realities, his characters tend not so much to challenge realities and solve his problems positively as to conform to given circumstances and his destiny.
'Circle structure' is pertinent to suggest the repetition and the circulation of destiny spreading over the hero's life. It implies two meanings to say the process of A→B acquires the fictional verisimilitude. It means that the meaning system of belief prescribing A is displaced by a novel through the hero's life. The hero's life consists of the realization of the destiny itself. Especially when the belief is deep rooted into the cultural tradition of Korea, Kim Dong-ri's poetics of fiction can be considered to be based on the traditional view of world of Korean people.
This study leves something to be desired in that it is dealing with one novel and so does not identify his structure comprehensively and concretely. This study is, however, the effort to quest the characteristics of Kim Dong-Ri's literature by means of concerning the structure of novels.
