직물신(織物神)의 전승(傳承)에 관한 시론적연구(試論的硏究) - 옷·베짜기 신화소를 중심으로 - = Study on A Tradition of The Gods of Weaving in Korean Myths

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 한국의 신화 가운데, 옷 만들기 및 베짜기의 기원을 말해주는 신화의 전승가능성을 탐색하기 위해 마련되었다. 이 신화는 창조신화의 영역에 속하는 것인데, 우리나라에는 그리 흔하지 않은 편이다.
외국의 창조신화를 보면, 대부분 여성 직물신이 옷을 만들고 베짜기를 한다. 남성창조신과는 구별되는 고유의 영역을 갖고 있는 것이다. 그런데, 중국과 일본에는 직물신이 창조신화에 나타나지 않는다. 중국에는 누에신, 양잠의 신, 베짜기의 신 등이 서로 다르게 존재하며, 일본에는 태양신 아마데라스가 직물신적 면모를 지니고 있다.
우리의 자료를 보면, 고유의 창조신화인 <창세가>에는 남성 창조신인 미륵이 큰옷을 짓고, 직접 옷을 만들고 있다. 그러나 이러한 이야기는 보편적이지 않다. 대개는 여성 신격이 옷을 만들고 베짜기하는데, 이러한 모습은 단편적으로 여러 이야기속에 남아 있다.
여성 신격이 등장하는 이야기들을 모아서 정리해 보면, 신격은 네 단계의 과정을 거친 듯하다. : (1) 창조신의 성격을 갖는 거인 여신, (2) 산천의 형성에 관여한 산신, (3) 산천 형성에 관여하지 않은 산신, (4) 농경신·지모신. (1), (2)에서는 거인여신들이 직물신적 능력이 부족하거나, 완전한 옷을 만들지 못한다. 그리고 (3), (4)에서는 그들은 창조신의 모습을 갖지 못한 채, 온전한 직물신의 모습을 보이고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper tries to explore the tradition of the korean myths on the origin of clothes making and weaving. These tales belong to the creation myth, which is rare among korean myths. In most of the creation myths of other countries, the weaving goddesses make clothes and weave the textiles. However, there is no weaving goddess in Chinese and Japanese creation myths. In China, the silkworm goddess, sericultural goddess, and the weaving goddess are in all different shapes. In Japan, Amaderas, the sun goddess, has the character as weaving goddess.
In korean records, goddesses of clothes making and weaving appear under diverse names, due to the influence from Chinese culture. In < Chang-se-ga(創世歌) >, one of the korean creation myths, the Mi-reuk, the creat god makes ‘Big clothes’ and he himself makes the clothes. However, this is not common in korean folktales. In most cases, female deity makes clothes and weaves the textiles, and these contents are reflected in many other folktales.
After analysis of many versions, female deities have developed through four stages : (1) The giants goddess with the character of the create god, (2) the mountain goddess that are involved in the formation of mountains and valleys, (3) the mountain goddess that are not involved in the formation of mountains and valleys, (4) the agricultural goddess and the earth-mother. In the cases of (1) and (2), the giant goddesses either lack the capacity of weaving goddess or do not make the complete clothes. Whereas, in the cases of (3) and (4), while they do not make the complete clothes, they display the full character og weaving goddesses.
These weaving goddesses did not necessarily have gone through the above four stage in the usual order. A good example tale for that is < Contest of strength between brother and sister >. In this tale, not only the ‘Hol-eo-mi’ the giant goddess who takes part in the formation of the mountains and valleys, but the ‘Nu-i’, her daughter, appears. The ‘Hol-eo-mi’ was originally called ‘Hal-mi’, ‘Seong-mo(聖母)’, or ‘Mago- Halmi’, but in this tale the character as ‘a widow’ is emphasized only. As a consequence, the deity of ‘Hol-eo-mi’ has deteriorated, and her capacity and the divine character has been transferred to ‘Nu-i’. Due to this, the creation behavior of giant goddess has disappeared and the ability of strength and clothes making has survived out of ‘Nui-i’.
