This study was conceived to overcome Mishina Ahkihide(三品彰英)’s theory that Korea’s oviparous myths originated in the south Area. Including Taiwan, East Coast of China, and Korea as well as Southeast Asia in a single zone of oviparity myths, he argued that the oviparous myths were introduced into Korea via the East Coast of China and Taiwan.
His argument was to support the legitimacy of a theoretical framework for the Divide and Rule Principle that the Japanese imperialists were oriented toward in the colonization process of Korea. The present study set out to point out the injustice in his opinions and demonstrate that the oviparous myths of Korea belonged to the Tungi(東夷) from the beginning. The findings were summarized as follows: First, there is no validity in the premise of Mishina that set a single cultural zone of oviparous myths based on the literature materials recorded in the sixth century and the orally transmitted materials examined in the 20th century. It is rational to look into materials recorded before a myth in literature in order to figure out the influential relations of the myth, despite which he used orally transmitted materials that were examined 14 centuries after the oviparous myths of Korea that were established in the literature and developed logic that the materials had influences on the oviparous myths of Korea.
Second, Mishina divided the inflow paths of oviparous myths into Korea into two:one was the Jumong myth(朱蒙神話) introduced via the Yemaek(濊貊) tribe in north, and the other included the Suro myth(首露神話) and the Hyeokgeose myth(赫居世神話) introduced via the ocean currents in south. His division of inflow paths is, however, wrong because there is no common feature among the concerned materials according to his argument. It is also because all of Goguryeo’s Jumong myth, Garak Kingdom’s Suro myth, and Silla’s Hyeokgeose myth say that royal authority derives from the sun and accordingly belong to the same line of materials.
Third, Mishina did not include the presence of oviparous myths that had been in China from the early days in the scope of his discussion. There is an oviparous motif in the birth stories of Xie(契), the progenitor of Shang, and Daye(大業), the progenitor of Qin(秦), recorded in Records of the Grand Historian written by Sima Qian and published in the first century before Christ. Mishina, however, did not include these materials of myth in the literature in his consideration.
Fourth, Kwang-chih Chang argued based on his research that the birth story of Shang’s Xie should have something to do with the oviparous myth that had been passed down in the East Coast and northeastern region of China. Accepting his argument and paying attention to the findings that there was an oviparous motif in the myths of Shang’s Xie, King Seowon of Seo Kingdom, and Goguryeo’s Jumong and that Qin with the birth story of Daye lived in the Tungi region, the present study maintained that an oviparous myth should be born among the Tungi since they had their oviparity myths from the beginning.
Finally, when accepting the argument that an oviparous myth was born in the Tungi, one will face a question as to how to look at the Pangu myth that has been regarded as one of the representative materials to support the theory that an oviparity myth originated in south in the academic circles. The Pangu myth offers materials that have the nature of a myth about the creation of the world recorded in Sanwu Liji(三五歷記) by Xu Zheng of Wu Dynasty in the third century. The argument that it originated in the southern region of China was raised before the fact that the Tungi had an oviparous myth of their own came out. If one accepts validity in the argument that the Miao in southern China were a branch of the Tungi among Chinese scholars, the possibility will rise further that the Pangu myth was transmitted to south along with the move of the Tungi to ...
