This essay aims to analyze Calvin’s view of the saving faith and compare it with that of the Westminster Confession of Faith and modern evangelicalism. Calvin’s discussion of faith is composed of his opposition to the three points of scholastic understanding of faith. Calvin’s definition of faith is “a firm and certain knowledge of God’s benevolence toward us, founded upon the truth of the freely given promise in Christ, both revealed to our minds and sealed upon our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” First, Calvin objects to the Scholastic concept of “implicit faith.” Implicit faith is, according to Calvin, the passive attitude to entrust all the work of searching for the truth of salvation to the church pronouncing himself to be ready uncritically to accept all the teachings of the church. In Calvin, the faith is knowledge that thanks to the reconciliation of Christ God is our merciful Father. With regard to faith, Calvin asserts, the thing of the primary importance is promises: faith finds the life in God and the life is found in the promise of mercy. The knowledge (cognitio) mentioned here by Calvinist is not just intellectual recognition (notitia, scientia) but includes the whole person. It not only admits to be true all that is said and recorded of God and Christ but place all hope and trust in God and Christ. Calvin opposed the scholastic teaching that by assent we can accept what the Scriptures offers and that this assent is the saving faith. The faith in Calvin is nearer to the assurance of the heart than to the comprehension of the head. When the heart, that is, the will and affections grasps the truths in trust, the truth is used by the individuals in a way to offer the salvation. In Calvin’s view the assurance of the heart was the chief part of faith. He saw that believing by the heart is much more difficult than believing by the brain. As a result of this stress on the superiority of the assurance of the heart, Calvin proclaims that he who does not have it is not a Christian. In other words, the assurance was the essence of true faith. Furthermore, he argues that there is an element of feeling in faith, feeling of full assurance. Nevertheless, Calvin maintains that there is doubt and anxiety in the believers who have the assurance. Some scholars such as Joel Beeke attempt to explain the apparent contradiction by distinguishing the ideal and the reality: in principle the faith ought to be certain and unwavering, but in reality doubt and distrust is mixed with the faith. This author finds that it is a mistaken interpretation. Believers really possesses the certain knowledge of God’s mercy. However, when he is assaulted by temptations, the assurance is shaken occasionally: when he feels guilty after committing some sins, or when he suffers from some tribulations, he feels that his trials have been caused by God’s judgement. Calvin finds, however, the more fundamental reasons of doubt and unbelief in the fact that by nature humans are beings that are hard to believe but easy to distrust. Calvin asserts, however, that notwithstanding this temptations faith ultimately triumphs: the faith is so deeply rooted in the saints that it can never be completely rooted out. In Calvin’s view, it was very dangerous for the scholastic theology to judge one’s salvation by moral conjecture. No one deems oneself unworthy of salvation. And one’s sense of oneself is changeable according to the time. It is true that Calvin opposed to regarding the morality as the primary evidence of saving faith. But he did not objected to using it as a supplementary means of judging one’s state of soul. In some occasions he admitted the good works to be the secondary evidence of justification. With respect to the relationship between faith and assurance, there are both continuity and discontinuity between Calvin and the Westminster Confession of Faith. Both recognize that faith grows: in the former, from the weak faith to the strong, in the latter, from the small to the bigger. The main divergency between the two is regarding whether the assurance is the essence of the faith: the former says “yes,” while the latter, “no.” “This infallible assurance doth not so belong to the essence of faith but that a true believer may wait long and conflict with many difficulties before he be partaker of it.” In the light of the Calvin’s doctrine of faith, we find that some aspects are missing in modern evangelism. Modern evangelists tend exclusively to emphasize the intellectual and voluntary assent as a condition for salvation. This seems to approach to the scholastic position of faith in Calvin’s time. In modern evangelism are lacking such elements of faith as the assurance or trust of heart. Calvin stressed as the prerequisite of the saving faith the role of the Holy Spirit who gives revelation and sealing on the heart. Modern evangelism underlines human responsibility and role so one-sidedly that the audiences may think that the “saving faith” entirely depends on one’s decision.
