Yihapche Hansi(Sino-Korean acrostic poetry) is a kind of Japchesi (miscellaneous poetry) that can be unveiled by either separating a character that a poet hopes to find out in his/her work into pyeon(left side) and bang (right side), placing them into each phrase, and then combining them together or combining the statements that are concerned with the shape of a character in each phrase. It is also called as Yihapsi (acrostic poetry), in abbreviation, indicating Sino-Korean poetry that is formed by the process of separating and combining a character, as suggested by the term Yihapche, literally. Through this separating and combining process, author`s information including family clan, name, Jaho(a number that is designated), etc are included into a poem or poem title and his/her common knowledge is exposed. It is worth noting in that Yihapsi is a poetic style that uses the principle of Paja(i.e. separating Jahoek, or the number of strokes in a Chinese character) actively. The historical origin of Yihapche goes back to the end of Zhou Dynasty in China when they were in a lot of social turmoil. During this period, as the escapism from the reality to know my own destiny in the future and seek comfort was prevalent, the theory of yin and yang and the Five Modes of Action became popular and the theory of Docham to foresee the rise and fall of the dynasty was born. Like Yang Yu-Hyup(465-521) told in < Myeongsi > under 『Mun- Shim-Jo-Ryong (literature critique in the Period of North and South Dynasties)』, “Yihap stemmed from Docham [離合之發, 萌于圖讖].” Yihapche was used to record the occult practices that could foretell the destiny of a nation through the process of separating and combining a character since it originated from Docham. Yihapche stems from Docham, but Sino-Korea Yihapche Hansi, or Yihapsi in short was posted first in Donghan Gong Yung(153-208)`s works. It appears that as Chamweehak(superstitious prophecy) and Munjahak(graphology) flourished in the period when Gong Yung lived, Yihapsi, which could include mysterious details in writings by mixing them appropriately was born. As a result of analyzing the poems related to Yihapsi written by the literary artists in Joseon Dynasty based on the database provided by the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics Act, it was found that largely three methods were used for creating Yihapsi:a) separating a character into pyeon(left) and bang (right), placing in each phrase, and then combining them, b)separating a word that is composed of two letters and placing them into two different phrases, respectively, and c) interpreting the shape of a character and finding a answer and that these various methods were used to include the matters related to the author, for example birthplace of his/her first ancestor, name, and Jaho or Yakmyeong Yihapche that was made by inserting drug name.
