This paper intends to examine, with the theological perspective of Matthew the Evangelist, the kind of discernment required for the disciples of Jesus to become the “disciples of the Kingdom of Heaven”. For this, a better understanding of the Greek word dikaiosu,nh, which can be translated as ‘righteousness’, is essential. This is because the disciples’ discernment is made possible only through the realization of dikaiosu,nh, although the word dikaiosu,nh itself does not directly refer to ‘discernment’. Until now in the study of the New Testament, ‘discernment’ has been highlighted as one of the important theological and spiritual themes of the Pauline Epistles. The purpose of this paper, however, is to show that ‘discernment’ can be another keyword with which we can understand the theology of the Gospel of Matthew.
The main text used in this research to examine Matthew's ‘discernment’ is the Sermon on the Mount.(Mt 5-7) The appearances of the noun dikaiosu,nh, which are seven times (Mt 5,6.10.20; 6,1.33) throughout the Gospel of Matthew, are concentrated in the Sermon on the Mount except for two times.(Mt 3:15; 21,32) In addition, the Sermon is the first discourse that constructs the narrative of the Gospel, and presupposes the relationship between Jesus the Master and His disciples.(see Mt 5,2) Jesus who has invited them and become their teacher must teach them ways to become the ‘disciples of the Kingdom of Heaven’. The structure of the Sermon reflects the content, order and method of Jesus' teaching for the disciples, i.e., the rhetoric of Jesus.
In the Gospel of Matthew, dikaiosu,nh means multiple things. On the one hand, it means God's salvation completed through the mission of the Messiah (Mt 5,6; 6,33), and on the other hand, men's faithful actions and attitudes towards the gift of salvation. Dikaiosu,nh, proclaimed through the ‘mouth’ of Jesus, not only informs the disciples of a ‘selection criterion’ of the Kingdom of Heaven, but also functions as a ‘principle of action’ guiding them to become the disciples of the Kingdom. Ultimately, it refers to the final goal pursued by the disciples, that is, God’s gift of ‘salvation’.
‘Discernment’ is a spiritual capacity required by the Church today to establish its identity and fulfill its fundamental mission. This is because discernment is an essential element that must precede all the other elements in realizing the synodal character of the Church that Pope Francis emphasizes. To the Church whose vital task is the ‘fulfillment of synodality’, Matthew the Evangelist provides a biblical-theological foundation for accurate discernment, making use of the Sermon on the Mount given by Jesus about the subject of dikaiosu,nh.
