Watermelon(Citrullus lanatus) belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, is one of the most widely consumed horticultural crop in the world. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of artificial medium in small-sized watermelon grown under hydroponic system. Watermelons with 4 to 5 normal leaves were planted at a planting distance of 20 cm (3,000 number/10a), and were cultivated under hydroponic system by drawing two secondary vine vertically using an ∩-shaped cultivation facility in a glass greenhouse. It was planted on July 27 and fruited on the 3rd flower (15 to 18 nodes, small-sized fruit) and harvested on September 24. During the growing period, the average external temperature was 24.6°C (day) and 21.1°C (night), and the internal temperature of the house was 29.7°C (day) and 23.4°C (night). Humidity was 75.9% (day) and 92.4% (night), and cumulative solar radiation during the entire growth period was 12,857J/㎠. Four treatments (root environment) were designed using artificial medium of perlite and cocopeat, and the volume of each artificial medium for each watermelon was divided into 8L and 38L. As a result, regardless of the variety, the perlite medium showed higher growth characteristics in stem length, leaf length and width, and stem diameter, etc. compared to cocopeat medium. Perlite 38L, which showed the best growth among all treatments, showed 38%, 63%, and 36% higher values in leaf length, and stem diameter of royal black cultivar, respectively, compared to cocopeat 8L (control), and Dalkomimini cultivar showed a similar trend. Fruit weight was 71% (Royal Black) and 18% (Darkomi mini) higher in Perlite 38L than cocopeat 8L (control), and the yield also showed a high level of 42% (Royal Black) and 37% (Dalkomi Mini) in Pearlite 38L than control. Sugar content was no difference in according to the type and volume of the medium. The total polyphenol and antioxidant levels of the royal black variety increased by 6% and 23%, respectively, in perlite compared to cocopeat, and by 23% and 30% in the case of the dalkomi mini variety. The concentration of lycopene in the dalkomi mini variety with red flesh was also increased by 15% in perlite compared to cocopeat.
