(Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence)의 뒷 부분에서 “회의론과 그 회의론의 거부”이라는 논지를 개진하고 있다.
Emmanuel Levinas is the most influential thinker on present debate on the ethics of the relation of the Self with the absolute Other in critical theory.
Levinas's ethical philosophy, as is coimmonly acknowledged, stants on the ground of Judaism, in spite of the fact that he makes distinction between his religious, confessional writing and his philosophical work. At first look, Levinas would seen to concentrate on transcendental dimension waiving elaborting the realm of life in which everthing goes on as a phenonmenon.
He appears to bne a strict, even rigid, Jewish as he only "sketches another orentation from which new lines of thought should be developed(Peperzak6)." Concernig art and literature, he devotes himself to explaining "the Saying," the pure, ethical language of the Self toward the Other, without really establishing a hermeneutics for the interpertation of "the Said" language as the corrupt, phenomenological means of expression. However, if one has a serious look at his ethical ideas one would not have a diffivulty to rind that Levinasian ethics has been nourished on the soil of the Western metaphysics and Christian culture, not to mention that he studied Hegel, Husserl, and heidegger among many.
Levians, whose ethical philosophy is now celebrated by scholars all over the world, Christian culture included, concentrates on the explication of his philoso phical policy of keeping "skepticism and refutation of skepticism" in Otherwise Than Being or beyond Essence ([OB]), his second major book.
Levinas values skepticism not in itself but on one condition that the refutation of skepticism goes with it, excluding the return of skepticism per se, calling it "pure nonsense" (OB 171). For Levinas is a religious--specifically Jewish--thinker, skeptical negation of dogmatism has to be negated again, since skepticism must not end denying aufgehoben as the third level of speculative unity nut go on to form a couple that can be neither married nor divorced. But it is also a solemn truth that for Levinas, the philosophical binary oppositins somehow must be for the transcendence of God. The binary oppositions are both inseparable and non-totalizable, and the function of skepticism should be developed in view of that idea.
Accoring to Levinas, skepticism must not be undedrstood in hegelian sense of self-difference or in Heideggerian unconcealment of being. Neither does Levinas agree with the Derridian project of deconstructionist exerts her/himself to deconstruct the whole logocentric tradition by successively abolishing the purport of thematic criticism, a Levinasian ethicist would seek the ways in which s/he not only can deconstruct the Western tradition that Levinas characterizes as ontology, but also can avoid the danger of making up a new ideological goal of clinging to deconstruction itself, concernig her/himself with both linguistic(as a deconstructionist's work is expected to be) and thematic criticisms. As Derrida, whose identity is also a Jewish philosospher, says, deconstruction is not an enclosure in nothingness, but an philospher, says, deconstruction is not an enclosure in nothingness, but an openness towords the other(Kearney 124), but from Levinas's ethical perspective, to be really open to the other(l'Aurte; the alterity that escapes the cognitive powers of the knowing subject) or the Other(d' Autrui; a person with her/his particular alterity), deconstruction has to be considered with the work of refuting itself. Hence, with the irrdeucible difference between skepticism and its refutation, which is the enigama of philosophy, Levinas's interset in skepticism and his concern with Derriad merge into one stream.
Levinas considers deconstruction as a skepticism, while Derrida himself says that he refutes the possibility of a skeptical philosophy. the ultimate import of Levinasian proposal, "skepticism and its refutation," is that is tis a strategy to present the transcedental, ethical relation between the self and the Other which bridges the self to the infinity of the Other. This paper explores the Levinasian proposal to use it for literary strudies. I will be examining ethical nature of the thoughts of Hegel, Heidegger, and Derrida, looking for the imporance of Levinas's issue of skepticism and refutation of it for the reading of the lierary text.
