In order to understand the effects of sociological factors on the economic behaviors of firms, this paper explores whether corporate activities for environmental protection influence the possibility of global alliance formation. Social legitimacy theory posits that firms are eager to build legitimacy and obtain trust among the stakeholders in the environment where the businesses are operated. If firms are actively engaged in environmental protection, the behaviors enable legitimacy building, which enhances reputation. Foreign partners can overcome liability of foreignness in host countries, sharing the partner reputation. Therefore, it is easier for firms with a higher level of environmental protection activities to find foreign partners, thus more likely to form global strategic alliances. As a self-interested organization, a firm’s efforts to build social legitimacy presume improvement on its social recognition. Therefore, if a firm is already active in advertising products, services, brand images, or social engagement, getting social recognition through environmental protection is less necessary, which will weaken the relationship between environmental protection and global strategic alliances. Also, given that environmental pollution is more problematic in developing countries (in comparison to advanced countries) due to industrialization, most developing countries are concerned with environmental issues and have the sustainability initiatives. Therefore, greater state ownership in a firm will strengthen the relationship between environmental protection and global strategic alliances. We collect data about 391 Chinese public firms during 2011-2016, which consists of 1,365 observations. Results from the zero-inflated negative binomial analysis suggest that the higher level of expenditure on environmental protection increases global strategic alliances. Expenditure on advertising activities generates negative moderating effects, while the state ownership generates positive moderating effects. Overall, our study stresses that social legitimacy is significantly important in doing businesses in emerging markets, and that the strategic alliances with local firms need to consider social elements as well as economic gains, which have been overlooked by the past studies.
