It is a critical commonplace that F. Scott Fitzgerald was an intense romantic as Lionel Trilling has pointed out: "Fitzgerald was perhaps the last notable writer to affirm the Romantic fantasy, descended from the Renaissance, of personal ambition and heroism, of life committed to, or thrown away for, some ideal of self. It has been frequently noted that Fitzgerald was influenced by the British Romantic poets, and the decadents of the late nineteenth century phase of the Romantic movement.
It is possible to read Fitzgerald's third novel, The Great Gatsby(1925), in different ways: one may read it as social criticism in that it is often considered as the quintessential novel on the 1920's, the fictional distillation of the Jazz Age; one may read the novel as a fictionalized autobiography in that Gatsby's romantic and frustrated desire for Daisy is recognized as an expression of the author's youthful obsession for Ginevra King and later for Zelda Sayre. One may also read the novel as a romance because of the various romantic elements in the novel. The aim of this essay is to trace romantic elements and the antiromantic, or negative, elements in the novel and to classify the novel as a negative romance in that Gatsby's quest for his ideal ends in failure. At the same time it will be contended that the negative elements of the novel are criticism of the situations of American civilization.
The major romantic elements of the novel can be found in the characterization of Gatsby: he is a man of mystery; he lives in his imaginary world; he has ieals, dreams, and illusions; he answers a call to something beyond life; he has the capacity to respond to the infinite possibilities of existence; he sees the world not as it is but as it might be.
Now such romantic traits of Gatsby as a romantic hero will be discussed. Gatsby is, first of all, a legendary figure like the heroes of the medieval romance. He inspires the sense of mystery because many details of his life are deliberately concealed under the blanket of ssecrecy. The result is that Gatsby inspires "romantic speculation" among the people who surround him. The guests who come to Gatsby's parties whisper confidentially: "Somebody told me that they thought he killed a man once."; "...he was a German spy during the war."(44); "...he's a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelms. That's where all his money comes from"(33). Though his father, Henry Gatz, introduced toward the end of the novel, is able to fill in certaion facts about Gatsby's early years, "the mythical aura surrounding the central figure is so strong that the father, ..., is transmogrified into the foster-father of universal romance.
