대량소비 문화와 물질주의에 대한 기독교의 책임

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

We are living in a consumerism-oriented society and Christians are also exposed to consumerism, while both mutually influencing each other. This paper will discuss how the contemporary consumerism influences our social life and consciousness and then seek to explore how Christianity should approach this significant issue. Consumerism in the context of fast-forwarding globalization is significant because it would characterize Christian identity.
First, adoption of anti-realistic prospect in our society leads to a human life subject to power maximization. In this situation, people will be forced into a slavery inclined toward the pursuit of power. Even though power has value within itself, it can be problematic when it is discussed without connection with humanity. Therefore, we need a holistic perspective.
Second, Christianity teaches that we should use our property based on our faith in God. Our property does not belong to us or our family, but to God. Because God is the only true owner of all property, we should use it for the sake of others' happiness. The mass consumption-oriented culture is not simply a individual or social structural issue, but the issue of community's value system and world view, and religious issue by extension.
Third, in contemporary society, individuals should be granted basic fundamental rights to choose goods and services according to their own preference and capacity. The proper education about this issue should be given to children. Although production and consumption can be theologically related to the original, it is certain that consumption itself is not sinful. This requires us to engage in the discussion of consumption.
Furth, material and wealth are not intrinsically evil. They are also part of's creation and equally good in God's sight. However, they are good just because they are good in God's sight like other creatures. This view teaches us to enjoy material and wealth, rather than craving for them.
Fifth, a desirable view that consists in enjoying property and rejects consumption and property-oriented attitude requires us to move beyond the individualism toward communitarian culture. This does not mean simply going back to the early Christian life or only the recovery of the monastic life and spirituality. It is because the promotion of the value of community in church, and solidarity between churches are also very important. Of course, the cooperation of churches and organizations should accompany a realistic and political certainty.
