This paper aims to discuss Edith Stein's doctoral thesis, ‘On the Problem of Empathy’ (Zum Problem der Einfühlung). Stein defines ‘empathy’ as a basic behavioral form in which others' experiences are understood, and a perceptive activity performed through the relationship with others. It is experiencing others' consciousness or approaching to another me and ‘re-living the experiences (Nach-Erleben)’ of others. In this respect, Stein's empathy differs from the ‘sympathy’ of Max Scheler, and may be called ‘empathy (Einfühlung).’ Therefore, in Stein's empathy theory, it is emphasized that joy and sorrow, love and hate, pain and anxiety, and happiness and misery can only be shared with others through empathy. Stein identifies the process in four steps as follows: ① A subject face-to-face with me (the other person stands face-to-face with me, fist clenched): The other person is situated as ‘the subject’ face to face with me. However, the other person is not an object. He or she is not ‘it.’ The person is clenching his or her fist. This is the first step of empathizing.
② I move myself to the inside of the other person, and experience his or her feeling vividly (To understand the meaning of the clenched fist of the other person, I empathize with him or her. Using what is reminded by my association of the perceived, I accept the other person's clenched fist): The other person as a being with a physical body induces me into himself or herself. I share the other person's feelings vividly in my imagination. In this phase, the other person, who has been standing face-to-face with me, is no longer facing me. Rather, I have moved into the other person's body, and I become ‘another me’. But why ‘another me’? First, it means that, while ‘another me’ exists as another identity, that other person as another identity is also a unique identity of himself/herself; therefore, the unique identity different from the ‘unique self’ is the ‘another me’. Second, ‘another me’ implies that, in empathizing the consciousness of the other person, the ‘I’ in the process of empathizing is a different ‘I’ or ‘I that is being empathized’. Third, ‘another me’ means that the ‘unique I’ can, by empathizing, understand myself in an objective way. Therefore, the key to Stein's empathy is “what has been moved into the other person through empathizing (Einfühlendes Hineinversetzen).” ③ I have understood the situation (I internalize the clenched fist as an expression of anger): I internalize the clenched fist of the other person as the expression of anger, I walk out of the other person as an identity with a physical body again, and I stand again face to face with the other person's body as the subject.
④ The other person receiving relief (The self empathizing [A] understands the self who has empathized through empathizing [B]. The empathized self, B, feels relieved by knowing that A has come to understand his or her situation): Stein expresses this phase as the repeatability of empathizing. Could this repeatability of empathizing be a one-time process that enables perfect understanding of the other person? Stein emphasizes that understanding others' mental life through empathy can never be obtained clearly and entirely at once. Then, why do we need to empathize? Through empathizing, we can understand others' characters, and, from this, develop our own character. In other words, empathy occurs ‘between’ the other person and myself, more specifically, in the space between the two selves. Empathizing is required to perceive ourselves not as egocentric beings isolated from the outside world, but as a being ‘related to’ the world full of ‘others-centric’ human beings and objects.
