Medieval Romanian language stays in an important period of transition from Old Romanian language to Contemporary Romanian. The period of Medieval Romanian language begins with 13th century and it goes
through until the beginning of 19th century. In this period, politically, the Romanian States (Wallachia, Transylvania, Moldavia) were constituting their feudal system, and their language was developing under influences from languages of neighbouring states. Most influences were from Hungarian, Turkish, and Modern Greek. Influences from Hungarian Language started from 11th century mainly in Transylvanian region and lasted some centuries. The first Turkish influences were arrived by Cumans (circ. 11th Century) and Pechenegs (circ. 9th to 11th century) though more serious Turkish language entered in Romania after 16th century, reaching their maximum scale of influences in Fanariot's Era. Turkish influences were limited to Wallachia and Moldavia not being able to reach to Transylvania. Another important language in this time wasModern Greek. Modern Greek could be understand in different way compared to Byzantine Greek which is considered as an archaism.
Modern Greek, as a neologism, was used to express modern idea and it was a kind of medium by which French terms were imported. These influences, but, couldn't reached to the morpho-syntactic or phonetical structure of Romanian. Influences were limited to vocabulary. There are some suffixes which are considered to be archaic languages influences like -şug(Hungarian), -isi(Greek), -giu(Turkish), but these suffixes do not have word formation capacity in Contemporary Romanian Language. Many words from Greek, Hungarian, or Turkish were perished, neologism from Neo-Latin origin substituting for these words. First Romanian written texts were appeared in this time (circ. 16th century). The early texts could be distinguished to two categories: one is
created texts and another is translated texts. The created texts have had poor sources of vocabulary, its style more likely to be an oral language. Translated texts were written after foreign grammar and vocabulary. It
is because the translaters couldn't find proper Romanian words for foreign language and they also were not that skillful translaters. These texts were translated after influences of Reformation, so these texts were
usually religious books. But some later literature books, legal books etc. were also published.
Texts from different areas show a regional language gap which reveals the grammatical or phonetical differences between neighbouring Romanian States. The differences existed until 18th century, but on the other hand, they were developing toward united modern language. Especially Wallachia area showed a progressive aspects. The progresses in printing house and broad distribution of texts between states, as a results, contributed to Romanian Language unification.Medieval Romanian Language, at the historical circumstances of feudalism system, made a linguistic progress toward modern language by interacting properly with surrounding languages and cultures.
