Recently, the increasing demand for radio communications has revitalized the concept of compact, light weight and low-loss filters. The bandpass filter composed of microstrip resonators mostly have a suitable structure for MIC(microwave integrated circuits) and the size of filters is reduced when the hairpin resonator is used as MIC filter, Conventional BPFs present spurious passbands at harmonic frequencies and those harmonics cause the interference with neighbor channels. To overcome this problem, extra filters are usually required.
Instead of extra filters, we can use a PBG(Photonic Bandgap) structure beneath the input/output feed line of the hairpin filters to suppress harmonics bands, thus improving the harmonic property.
The PBG structure, which have a periodic structure, is known as providing rejection of certain frequency bands, periodically employing slots of the constant size on the ground of a microstrip filter. The harmonic property depends on the bandgap property, such as the number of lattice, lattice shapes, and lattice spacing, Circular and square slots are usually used but square slot is chosen for short simulating time.
This paper presents MIC bandpass filter suitable for application in TV broadcasting system and fixed satellite service in C-band(4~8GHz). Through the trade-off between selectivity and insertion loss. we choose a four-pole hairpin resonator filter.
CAD tools such as Microwave Harmonica, Ensemble and HFSS are used to design filters. The substrate used for the fabricated microwave filters is RT/Duroid 6010 of the Rogers with dielectric constant of 10.5 and 25 mil thick to minimize the size and reduce the radiation loss and the dielectric loss.
In order to show the validity of the proposed PBG structure, the filters using the PBG structure and those without using the PBG structure are fabricated and measured.
The theoretical filter characteristics using the design softwares are shown that the insertion losses in the passbands are very small and the PBG effects in the stopbands also are clear. In the fabricated filter characteristics, however, harmonic suppression property in stopbands is good but insertion losses is increased in the passbands (6 dB).
This is a potential problem of the most MIC resonator filters. It can be solved by choosing low insertion loss filters or superconductive MIC filters using HTS(high temperature superconductor).
