The Chinese word for castle town, Dojo (都城), renders the meaning of a wall or an outer wall surrounding a capital city. The Changan Castle (長安城) of the China s Tang Dynasty and the Heijyokyo (平城京) of Japan are of rectangular shape constructed on the flat level of ground. The first of its kind in Japan was Hujiharakyo (藤原京) which became the capital city in 694. It was made more and more evident from the late excavation that Sabi Castle of Baeke Kingdomg had an outer wall surrounding the royal capital. The castle was encircled in the south and west by the Geumgang River (Baekma River) that meandered vastly along the section, while its eastern and northern side was guarded by an outer wall which was constructed on the hilly districts and ridges of a rugged mountain. In addition, a number of mountain fortress walls were placed in the mountainous region surrounding the royal capital to ensure a thoroughgoing defense system for it. Among the castle towns of the Three Kingdoms on the Korean Peninsula, it was Sabi Castle of Baekje Kingdom that affected the royal palaces and castle walls of Japan by means of their existence, particularly their types of defense system. In 630, a royal palace was built for the first time during the period of Asoka (飛鳥). As a defense system for the royal palace, that of Sabi Castle, Baekje Kingdom, was then adopted in order to take full advantage of steep geographical conditions in the land of Asoka that was found to be narrow enough to drive back the attack from the Tang Dynasty. The Japanese regime had maintained close diplomatic relations with Baekje Kingdom from as early as the 4th century onward. It was a kind of alliance formed with a view to defend against Silla and Goguryo Kingdoms which were threatening the very existence of both countries. Although there were some ups and downs in the diplomatic relations between the two countries in around the 5~6centuries, a good neighborly relation at least could have been maintained between them upto the middle of the 7th century. In this sense, it may be thus said to be a matter of course that Japan adopted the Baekje s type of royal authority defense system during the period. Besides, a construction project likely to build an outer wall surrounding the royal palace had undergone at Asoka sometime during the period ranging from the fall of Baekje Kingdom in 660 to the defeat in the sea battle at Baekchon River in 663 by the Japanese military force which supported restoration of Baekje. It may not be wrong to presume that the construction of the outer wall was a part of attempts to introduce the defense system of Sabi Castle, Baekje Kingdom, more actively than before
