This study was conducted in view of the need to reconsider existing theories and controversial points upon the inclusion of the newly found Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues dating from the Southern dynasties. This paper classifies Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues based on their appearance and the letters inscribed on them. As a result, it was found that the Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues dating from the Southern dynasties abhaya mudra (a hand gesture signifying the act of relieving people of their fears, worries and hardships), and hold a willow twig and a rod of magic beads in the hands. Though the relevant materials are scarce, the first two were statues of the main Buddha, while the third was a statue of the attendant Buddha.
Statues that were once thought to be Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues making the aforementioned abhaya mudra or the vara mudra were corrected as statues making the abhaya mudra based on their appearance. Many Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues with the abhaya mudra were identified among the miniature gilt-bronze statues found in Nanjing. They look similar to each other. Such is also the case with their counterparts dating from the Nothern dynasties. Based on the observations made at this time, it is conjectured that the Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues dating from a willow twig or a rod of magic beads in their hands and forming the abhaya mudra; and that those forming the abhaya mudra were made before those with a willow twig or arod of magic beads.
This study discovered that the basis for the depiction of the Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues with the abhaya mudra is the Cheonggwanseeumsobokdokhae Dharani Sutra, Lotus Sutra Chapter 25. Thus, it is thought that, contrary to the theory held by researchers, the main text of Buddhist Schools about Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues with the abhaya mudra did exist, and that this hand gesture is a unique feature of Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues.
It has also been ascertained that Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues dating from the Southern dynasties a willow twig, a kundika bottle, and a small jug in some cases. It is assumed that those holding a willow twig and a small jug were made before those with a willow twig and a kundika bottle. The basis for the inclusion of a small jug or a kundika bottle in the hands of Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues was found in the Cheonggwaneumgyeong Sutra, the main text of Buddhist schools. As it would have been difficult to portray the pure water stated in the scripture in a sculpture, it is possible that the craftsmen used a small jug or a kundika bottle to symbolize it .
One noteworthy thing is that the Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues with willow twig dating from the Southern metamorphosed Buddha, hanging accessories, Pure Land, and an avalokitesvara bodhisattva as a savior. It is thought that the Lotus Sutra and Gwan Muryangsugyeong Sutra indicate a connection between them. It is possible that the said Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues with willow twig were the result of an attempt to portray the symbols contained in Kuanyin-related scriptures prevalent in that society.
Researchers have long held the view that there was a connection between the Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues dating from the Southern the Lotus Sutra, but this study shows that the Cheonggwaneum Sutra also influenced those statues. This scripture was also introduced to the Baekje Dynasty. Buddha statues in Japan indicate a connection with bodhisattva statues holding a rod of magic beads. The images of bodhisattva statues holding magic beads in their hands have been the subject of heated controversy concerning their origin, the types of objects held in their hands, and their name.
New materials have been found concerning the Avalokitesvara bodhisattva statues dating from the Southern rod of magic beads held by bodhisattva statues originated from the the Southern dynasties. It is hard to say whether such bodhisattva statue...
