The population has been decreasing in Korea. Accordingly, the dance population has been decreasing. The situation of the dance world has been worsened. The positive effects of dance competitions are to discover new dancers, and to activate dance as well as dance`s educational effects. However, these days, the negative effects are more predominant than the positive effects. The targets of Korea` dance competitions are divided into elementary school, middle school, high school, and university students, and general public. Middle schools, high schools, universities, associations, and public institutions and agencies have hosted major competitions. It is hard to find specialized fields in dance competitions. The competitions are divided into three genres - traditional Korean dance, modern dance, and ballet. They are subdivided into traditional and original dances within the genres monotonously. Because there is no specialized competitions, the standards of evaluations are limited to formal conditions, without considering the features of each target and age. In case of Korean original dance at each dance competition, the development and expression of movements matching the performance`s title and music are important. In terms of tradition, Korean dances are composed of the items defined as the intangible cultural heritages in the traditional repertory. Therefore, it seems that Korean original dances are only Taepyungmu, Salpuri-chum, and Seungmu. It is essential to develop various repertories rather than to insist Salpuri-chum, Taepyungmu, and Seungmu only. The most important factor is to form the concepts about tradition and creation. Tradition is limited to ballet and Korean dance. Creation should be done without the classifications of Korean dance, modern dance, and ballet. If making leaps of logic, dividing the competitions in Korea into three parts can be regarded as the problems against Korean dance`s creation, and about the negative effects of the Korean dance competitions. Since dance was accepted as an art in Korea, each university has established dance department. National, public, and professional organizations of dance have been established. As a result, the competition systems have been applied to dance, like music and fine arts. Since Ewha Women`s University first held `the First National Dance Competition for Middle and High Schools` at the Sikong-kwan in 1955 in Korea, many dance competitions in Korea have been emerged. Currently, `the Recital of New Dances,` which was created and hosted by Dong-a Il-bo, has the longest history. It has been highlighted as a debut stage for new choreographers. Since the 1960s, many competitions have been gradually held at middle schools, high schools, and universities, and even each associations. Therefore, the period was regarded as the Renaissance of dance. However, recently, the numbers of dancers are decreasing significantly, and even dance institutes in local places have been closed down. As mentioned above, social environments have been rapidly changed. Accordingly, the standards of values have been changed. Now we need to make a fundamental question about where the trends and directions of dance in Korea are heading. In addition, the fact that the numbers of dancers have been decreasing and the perception of dance has been degraded, is a big problem. It is necessary to study an alternative plan against the decrease of dance population, in order to activate dance and improve the dance competitions. This study is based on the competitions in which I have participated as a judge, the classes which are open to the Internet, and video materials, because previous studies related to this study`s theme are improper. There are two limitations in this study. First, I looked at each competition in a middle school, a high school, a university, an organization, an academy, and a newspaper, rather than all competitions which are held in all places in Korea. Second, this study focuses only on the contents about the examples of dance. Today, one of the big problems about the direction of Korean dance is dance tendency, which is the major content of each dance competition. This also should be mentioned in the nature and future directions of Korean dance in a macroscopic way. I wish to recall the features and aesthetic senses of our dance again in this study. I consider that the realization of these problems could be helpful to propose the alternatives against the decrease of dance population. I would like to provide this study as one of the solutions to deal with these problems.
