Since Gunkel pioneered his form-critical study on the Psalter, Ps 110 has been typically understood as a royal psalm. However, when it was placed in the Book of Psalms, it was understood as an eschatological psalm because of its literary context in the Psalter and its generic similarities to the eschatological texts written in the Second Temple period. Ps 110 in its literary context has ``ascended`` into another genre. In the macro-context of the Psalter, the strategically positioned royal psalms show the progress of the eschatological message about the Messiah and his kingdom from the Messiah`s installation (Ps 2), to his kingdom morality (Ps 72), to his suffering and rejection (Ps 89), to his initial victory (Ps 110), to his reign (Ps 132), and finally to his last battle and subsequent blessings (Ps 144). The micro-context of Ps 110 is Pss 108-118 in which the three Davidic psalms (108-110) are one sub-unit and the doxological psalms (111-118) are the other sub-unit. The three Davidic psalms, connected with lexical links, concatenistic links, and thematic links, display three important themes such as the defeat of the enemies, Yahweh`s deliverance, and the covenant. These psalms are primarily linked to the stages of the Messiah`s eschatological war against his enemies. After a pre-battle prayer (108) and a pre-battle ritual curse (109), Ps 110 describes the Messiah`s actual eschatological warfare against enemy nations and kings. The Messiah appeals to Yahweh`s help based on his covenantal faithfulness by using the covenantal keyword dsx in Pss 108-109. In Ps 110, the actual process of crushing the enemies is depicted as the fulfillment of the Davidic covenant (2 Sam 7:11b-16). After the Messiah defeats the enemies in Ps 110, the paeans of praise (Pss 111-118) are offered to Yahweh, who led the Messiah`s eschatological warfare (Ps 110). This structure matches the strategically positioned royal psalm followed by doxology in the Psalter. In the literary context of the Psalter, hence, Ps 110 delivers a strong message about the eschatological figure`s-the Messiah`s-warfare, victory, and priestly role after the pattern of Melchizedek. In addition, the literary features of Ps 110 are strikingly similar to the representative eschatological texts in the Prophets including Zech 9-14, Joel 3- 4[MT], and Ezek 34-48, in particular. Eschatological features of Ps 110 match well those of these eschatological texts in terms of (editorial) dating, lexemes and phrases, themes and motifs, stylistic characteristics, and, finally, content and theology. Ps 110 was probably composed in the early monarchical period, but was positioned in its particular context in Book V at the time the book of Zechariah was written. In the context of its present location, in sum, Ps 110 should be regarded as a messianic psalm or an eschatological psalm. It portrays "an eschatological vision of God`s coming kingdom" which will be initiated by the Messiah`s eschatological warfare against his enemies.
