This is a thesis on the closure of the contemporary novel, that is postmodernist fiction. This is a study on the general characteristics and poetics of postmodernist fiction, and especially on the closure of some contemporary novels. We live no longer in the age of modernism ; we are in the middle of postmodernism.
there is a certain kind of comtemporary avant-garde art which is said to be neither modernist nor antimodernist, but postmodernist ; it continues the modernist critique of traditional mimetic art, and shares modernist commitment to innovation, but pursues these aims by method of its own. It tries to go beyond modernist, or around it, and is often critical of modernism.
We have a novel in which the reader will find none of the gratificaton to be had from the traditional novel. The new novel repeats itself, bisects itself, modifies itself, contradicts itself, without even accumulating enough bulk to constitute a past-and thus a story in the traditional sense of the word. The traditional Aristotelian idea of linear plot doesn't exist, time doesn't exist and personality doesn't exist. Life and fiction are no longer distinguishable one from the other, life is never linear, in fact life is chaos because it is never experienced in a straight, chronological line, and similarly orderly narration is no longer possible. So the well-made plot has become quite inessential to fiction. The plot has disappeared and it is no longer necessary to have the events of fiction to follow a logical pattern in time and space. So the fictionality is emphasized and counted as the most conspicous aspect and element of postmodernist fiction.
David Lodge thinks such strategies as contradiction, permutation, discontinuity, randomness, excess and short-circuit are the characteristic features of post-modernist fiction.
Douwe Fokkema points out compositional and semantic conventions of postmodernism such as inclusiveness, deliberate indiscriminateness, non-selection and logical impossibility, as the poetics of postmodernism.
A new and more fabulous kind of fiction that is often called fabualtion and meta-fiction has come into being and has much to teach us and satisfaction to give us.
We may overgeneralizingly say that the poetics of Romanticism involved a concentration on the author and his biography and that realism emphasized social and historical reference, and that modernism proceeded to orient readers formalistically toward the closed text and its difficulties ad deep psychology. And it seems that the poetics of postmodernism continue and expand and complicate the feature of modernism. Postmodernist metafiction tends to play with the possibilities of multiple meanings and of forms.
Ordinary readers have an interest in endings of fiction because appreciating endings is one way of evaluating and organizing personal experience.
The discussion of closure includes the discussion of aesthetic patterns, that is, verbal, metaphorical and formal patterns. It includes the study of the themes of the text and even the ideas of extratextual contexts including the author's life and his times.
To approach fiction by way of closure helps to appreciate its form and theme. Closure reveals the essences of novel with particular clarity. So to study closure is to re-create and re-experience fiction vividly. The ending of fiction is significant in this connection. Instead of the closed ending of the traditional novel, and instead of the open ending of the modernist novel, we get the multiple ending, double ending or alternative ending, false ending or parody ending.
In The French Lieutenant's Woman John Fowles presents alternative endings to his story and invites the reader to choose between them. The reader of the novel, having to choose an ending, becomes a player in the game. And multiple ending texts are related to the forking path narratives in which mutually exclusive possibilities have been jointly realized.
