The aim of this paper is to illuminate the term, “Minh Hương” (明郷, Ming-xiang in Chinese), the Chinese-Vietnamese in Vietnam, by overviewing the historical changes of "Minh Hương" and the current reality based on Vietnamese and Japanese data and previous studies. In Vietnam, the category of Chinese residents is called "Người Hoa(華人, Huaren in Chinese)" and is one of the 53 ethnic minorities. This category includes: the group of people maintaining the consciousness of Chinese-ness and their descendants, and the indigenized ethnic Chinese as vanishing the ethnic consciousness and their descendants. “Minh Hương” is the latter. “Minh Hương” is not officially recognized as a minority group by the Vietnamese government, but is registered as a "Kinh" ethnic group, the majority in Vietnam. The origin of the term "Minh Hương" dates from 1644 to the 17th century in the late Ming and the beginning of Qing dynasty of China. At that time, the Chinese immigrant group who moved to Vietnam was called "Minh Hương.“ "Minh Hương" people were widely known that a large number of people fled from China during the fall of the Ming dynasty from the 1600s to the late 17th century, seeking for permanent residence in Vietnam. Those Chinese immigrants and the mixed-heritage children who were born between them and the local women were also called as "Minh Hương 明香". The meaning of the term has been historically explained either as “Ming refugees” or “people who maintain the incense of the Ming dynasty". Since the latter half of the 17th century, the communities named "Minh Hương Xa 明香社" have been established in many parts of Vietnam. It was estimated that around 1650 a colony of "Minh Hương Xa“ Temple was formed by the Confucian scholars who came to Vietnam without obeying the Qing Dynasty. Founded in 1802, the Nguyen Dynasty implemented a policy to establish a self-governing organization called "Minh Hương" for the mixed blood of marriage between Chinese immigrants and Vietnamese women, who had been emigrated to Vietnam for the purpose of economic development and population growth. The name “Minh Hương明香” was officially changed to "Minh Hương 明郷" in 1827. In fact, these two words are homophones in Vietnamese language. In 1849, the Nguyen Dynasty induced the indigenization of the Chinese immigrants by granting “Minh Hương” the qualification for taking the imperial examination so that they could work as civil servants. During the French colonial period, “Minh Hương” enjoyed their special legal status as the colonial government arbitrarily treated them as Vietnamese or Chinese. Since the 1950s, the South Vietnamese government's assimilation policy had officially defined "Minh Hương" to be Vietnamese with Vietnamese nationality, and the name "Minh Hương" disappeared from official administrative documents. Since then, "Minh Hương" has been only registered both as Vietnamese nationality and "Kinh" ethnicity. Due to this policy, they have legally become the same as ordinary Vietnamese. Currently, in cities such as Huế, Hội An, and Hồ Chí Minh City, there are people who keep claiming themselves as descendants of “Minh Hương”or descendants of “Minh Hương”. Through conducting case studies in those localities, this paper argues that although of Chinese or Chinese origin, most of those people’s families or lineages had immigrated to Vietnam since 18th century. Among them, "Minh Hương" has been inherited from generation to generation, sharing historical characteristics that began at the end of the Ming Dynasty and having various meanings.
