후기 근대의 공포와 재앙의 상상력 -편혜영의『재와 빨강』 = The Imagination of Fear and Disaster in the Post-modern Era: on Ash and Red

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

‘Fear`` in Korean Literature has hardly been considered as a meaningful topic because the intense pathos aroused by fear was taken as a negative sentiment which was not appropriate for the ideal of abstraction of modern literature. Fear is a ``negative experience`` as it is a human emotion developed and caused when human being becomes aware of his/her fragile morality and helplessness in the face of God; it is also an object which transcends or overwhelms the limited power of human. Thus, it weakens human`s confidence in the world and makes the subject forget itself. It is a destructive sentiment that brings self-expulsion and self-confiscation to the subject. At the same time, fear is an opportunity for phenomenological recall which enables us to see the reality of world for whom have no clear picture of the overall world amid mundane everyday life. It can bring a heroic individual into existence who wants to conquer it with a strong eager to fight against upcoming danger. Fear, which has risen as the overwhelming sentiment of this era since the introduction of the neo-liberalist market, has gradually lost its destructive and threatening characteristics as it was absorbed into the internal experience of human. It reveals that human would be relying on the delusive illusion of mega-ego, rather than being humble. It becomes a personalized sentiment which each individual should cope with and the anxiety which human suffers because of unlimited competitions and uncertain future strengthens his/her self-love because it accompanies the desire to negate the existence of other individuals. This is because survival has become the most important categorical imperative. Therefore, the question now is not the disaster itself but the mind-set of human: how do we risk dangers from the advent of fear of an end? Ash and Red, a novel written by Pyon, Hae-Young, has become an issue because it allegorizes the signs of resurrection of absolutism due to the rise of barbarous nature where each human becomes a wolf to others, through imagination of disaster. We will need to turn our attention, not to the subject of fear but, to the horrible scenes which have been generated from the rise of ideology or absolutism of fear. Ash and Red induces a critical self-examination on culture of horror through depiction of an extreme struggle for survival as well as the falling of human which seems like a falling of a rat into a bottomless pit.
