This study aims to offer insight into the intention and ambition reflected in the Studiolo of Urbino. I would like to discuss the artistic significance of the Studiolo of Urbino in its intimate architectural relationship with the other spaces of the Ducal Palace at Urbino.
Placed in the most inward and secret area of the Ducal Palace, the Studiolo is lavishly decorated with the portraits of ‘Famous Men’ and sumptuous intarsia panels. Originally, Studiolo functioned as a private space for study and meditation. However, the Studiolo of Urbino, unlike previous examples, was a space that was charged with the ambition of prominent political leader at the birth of a concept of modern nations in the West.
The late fifteenth century saw the development of highly sophisticated courtly culture as well as the emergence of prominent dukes and princes who succeeded in achieving great military and political power. A strict hierarchy in court became increasingly emphasized by those dukes and princes and can be clearly seen in the spatial arrangement of the Ducal Palace at Urbino.
Federico’s Ducal Palace, originally founded over a medieval building, was transformed into an ideal Renaissance palace after three-time renovations. Unlike the medieval building, the size and arrangement of rooms in the newly renovated Ducal Palace was determined on the basis of the function and importance of rooms. Considering its location and size, the Studiolo seems to have occupied the top of architectural hierarchy in the Ducal Palace at Urbino.
The decoration program of the Studiolo of Urbino is composed of portrait panels and intarsia panels. A series of portraits reveals Federico’s great knowledge of antiquity and his passion for liberal arts. More importantly, his choice of the figures and arrangement of their portraits suggests that Federico’s cultural sophistication was largely indebted to his teacher Vittorino da Feltre, a well-known humanist in that period. On the Trompe-l’oeil marquetry panels, Cardinal Virtues such as Justice, Fortitude, Temperance, Prudence are symbolized each as sword, mace, clock and squirrel. Theological Virtues such as Charity, Faith and Hope are also illustrated. Particularly, the squirrel and the fruit basket with pomegranates rendered on the protruding east wall, which each symbolized Prudence and Unity, suggest that the Duke of Urbino may have been profoundly influenced by he image of Ideal Ruler, widely discussed by scholars like Thomas Aquinas.
On the other hand, the intarsia panels of east wall explicitly displays Federico’s desire to harmonize liberal and military arts. The east wall can be divided into Vita Activa on the left and Vita Contemplativa on the right. Armors and other equipments related to a successful condottiere are illustrated on the side of Vita Activa, while the virtual studiolo is placed on the side of Vita Contemplativa.
In conclusion, the sumptuously decorated program of the Studiolo of Urbino illustrates every values and achievements that Federico da Montefeltro wished to achieve and propagate.
I would like to say that the Studiolo of Urbino was a space full of desire and ambition of a Renaissance duke who wished to be both a cultivated humanist and powerful legitimate political leader.
