The key link between mother and child is lactation. Since mother"s milkis the first food people have in mouth, it is the symbol of elemental life which arouses the sense of one"s origin of existence. What represents motherhood is the Virgin Mary in Christian world and Queen Maya, the mother of Buddha, in Buddhist tradition. Not to mention the fact that the mothers of the two major religions are closely related to genealogy of goddess, there are myths and iconic images of lactation about them,
Let"s start at 佛傳文學, the stories of the life of Buddha. On the top of the list, there’s the masterpiece of Japanese 12th Century folktale, 今昔物語集, which begins its vast narratives with the biography of Buddha. The struggle to localize 佛傳文學, originated from Chinese translation of Buddhist classics, is carved in every sentence just as it was. After 今昔物語集, various themes of 佛傳文學 is added in Japanese culture, and when it comes to Shakanohonji (釈迦の本地) in 15, 16th Century, variety of stories in Buddhist classics are illustrated as forms of scroll or book. One of the most common illustrations in those collections is of regathering of Buddha and Maya. After Maya died after a week of Buddha"s birth, she revived in heaven and finally met Buddha in nirvana again. The pictures describe the scene where Maya"s milk sucked into Buddha"s mouth as evidence of mother and son.
Even though the episode was well known and often mentioned as an icon of mother-son relationship not only in Japan but other parts of Asia including India, China and Korea, it was the first pictorialization of lactation itself in Shakanohonji. There is also a illustration of this gathering in illustrated edition of 釋氏源流 in contemporaneous Ming dynasty, however, that picture only depicts the two figure together with no hint of lactation.
Meanwhile, lactation of the Virgin Mary was also widely picturized. Interesting thing is that who drinks milk is not her holy son, but St. Bernardus in 12th Century France who is known as worshiper of Holy Mother. It is said that he gained superpower after seeing Mary in a visual hallucination and tasting milk on his lip dropping from her. Is the similarity of the two scenes - an image that not giving milk to the baby in mother"s arm but to grown man - just a result of coincidence or is there a certain linkage? A simple explanation of cause and effect or one track influence isn"t enough. To solve the continuous mystery of motherhood and life, this thesis compares and decodes the two image of lactation of Mary and Maya in various aspects.
