In this study, the animals and plants recorded in Samgukyusa were organized by a complete enumeration survey, and through the aspects of the collection, the ancient Koreans' perception of nature and life, which was established along with the acceptance of Buddhism, was examined.
Animals and plants recorded in scriptures and historical books contain the history together, as well as beliefs, culture and environment, so animals and plants are inevitably elements that can look into the general consciousness of Koreans.
In particular, Samgukyusa was able to further expand the collection of various natural elements such as animals and plants by embracing the unrealistic world and supernatural elements that were considered off- topic.
Samgukyusa contains 58 kinds of animals and 55 kinds of plants.
The relation with plants and Buddhism was relatively higher than that of animals, as animals were recorded in the first half of Samgukyusa, and plants were mainly recorded in the second half, which were highly related to Buddhism.
And though the boundary of separation or coordination between ancient nature worship and Buddhism is ambiguous, both animals and plants have something in common: sacred spaces, guardians of Buddhism, and objects of Buddhist omens and experiences. In addition, both animals and plants were projections representing human thoughts and contained the fundamental equality and interdependence of life.
Although it is necessary to discuss the calculation of imaginary animals and plants and unspecified creatures, the process of exploring the role of animals and plants in Samgukyusa can be an opportunity to look into the problem of present and future through the nature friendly awareness settled in ancient Koreans, especially from the perspective of Buddhism.
