The ‘Cold War,’ a multifaceted term referring simutaneouly to a historical stage, an ideological regime, and a cultural apparatus, engages the boundary of ‘state power’ ‘modernity’ and ‘knowledge production.’ Through the prism of the Cold War, this paper illuminates cultural and political siginifncances that lies in the knowledge production of Korean Studies in North America as well as examines the contreapuntal relationship between the Cold War culture and Korean studies.
On one hand, the birth and formation of Korean studies in the United States is inseparable with the neocolonial origin of area studies that emerged in the reorganized world order since the mid-20th century. However, on the other hand, discourses of area studies in (post)Cold War era also produced what Immanuel Wallestein calls “unintended consquences” by encountering area studies scholars’ efforts to embrace other discourses including interdisciplinary approaches, cultural studies, discussions on biopolitics and the sovereign power, and diasporic and women’s studies.
In the comparative discussion of various researches that were recently published by the so-called third generation of Korean studies in the United States and Canada, the paper examines the scholarly trajectory of Korean studies’ appropriation of the Cold War. The young scholars’ contribution to Korean studies lies in that they cope with the precedent generations’ limits of viewing Korea from the distant gaze and position themselves in the conjucture of the inside and the ouside of Korea through the acquisition of rather familiar sense of Korean language and culture.
First, Theodore Hughes’s book Literature and Film in Cold War South Korea and Steven Chung’s Split Screen Korea disclose how Korean culture emerged as a battle field for the Cold War world system and participated in the distribution of the sensible. These works underscore how siginificant it is to undertand Liberation Space and the Cold War in the history of modern Korean literature and film, and demonstrate the critical distance from the nationalist historiography of modern Korea based on the dichotomy of Cold War ethos and the state-driven developmentalism.
Next, as a critique of West-oriented modernity studies, Moon Seungsook’s Militerized Modernity and Gendered Citizenship in South Korea and John DiMoia’s Reconstructing Bodies pose invaluable questions to the discourse of modernity and modernization in Korea. Their social science approach pays attention to the microscopic area of everyday life that shows the bodily construction and fracture of the modern nation-state. They are exemplary works that point out contractictions within terms such as ‘Western modernity as the universial’ and ‘indigineous modernity as the particular’ and presents the intertwinement of American impacts and vernacular practices in modern Korea.
If there is any difference between Korean studies abroad and Korean studies within South Korea, it concerns the different approach to nationalism. Lastly, the paper introduces three books, Kelly Jeong’s Crisis of Gender and the Nation in Korean Literature and Cinema, Grace Cho’s Haunting the Korean Diaspora, and Lee Jin-kyung’s Service Economies. Problematizing the genderd notion of nation and the bourgeois historiography for the male subjectivity, these works focusing on figures of New Women and modern girls, military sex laborers, service workers, and diasporic women in light of gender politics and postcolonial feminism.
To locate these books in the large framework of the Cold War and Korean studies and seee them as the unintended consequences of area studies, the paper argues that they have overcome the power structure of the Cold War discourse and knowledge and that they show a cricial distance from the ‘nation’ that had been considered essential to Korean studies. Further discussion will be needed in order that Korean studies grow not as a margin...
