The "Stupa Forest," consisting of more than two hundred stupa reliefs on the hillsides surrounding the Numinous Spring Monastery in present-day Henan Province, China, was constructed to memorialize monks, nuns, and laity. Beginning in the late sixth century, the site served for several centuries as a unique mortuary space for monuments with connotations of stupas, monastic reliquaries, relic depositories, and cave sanctuaries. This study discusses the overall history and general characteristics of the "Stupa Forest" with consideration of its relationship with the adjacent Great Abiding Sacred Cave. In addition, it presents a prolegomena to an iconographical exploration of the various types of mortuary reliefs and their contemporaneous designations.
Certain honorees and dedicants at the "Stupa Forest" are identified as followers of the Three Levels Movement that flourished during the Sui and Tang dynasties. The site also reveals traces of the striking practice of "corpse exposure," which involved the offering of the deceased s body to animals and insects for food as the ultimate act of giving and asceticism and which was mostly practiced by the movements followers. Lingyu's Great Abiding Sacred Cave is also located at the site, and its perceived role as a matrix for the teaching and practice of the Three Levels Movement places it at a crucial nexus in the formation of the entire Stupa Forest.
A large majority of the mortuary stupa reliefs show a structure of a single story with a square plan, a type that was widely popularized since the Northern Qi and best exemplified by Daoping's ash stupa in the Numinous Spring Monastery. This type seems to have been associated with the so -called "Asokan stupa." In most stupa reliefs at the site, the central niche of the stupa s main body, normally assigned to Buddha or Bodhisattva images, was replaced with a seated frontal portrait of the deceased. This feature can be interpreted as a "private deification" pursued by disciples or relatives in a compelling visual statement, with the possible incorporation of the Three levels Movement's idea of the "Universal Buddha."
The various designations for each relief, "cremated-body stupa," "scattered-body stupa," "spirit stupa," "shadow stupa," and "image stupa," point to a distinct desire on the part of the carver/dedicator of each work. One particularly ambiguous designation that calls for further analysis is "zhitita," since it combines two contradictory terms of "zhiti," a stupa without relics, and "ta," one with relics, as addressed in the Mah?s?mghika Vinaya and the Pearl Grove of the Dharma Garden.
The presence of this astonishing variety among reliefs of the same general type and inscribed designations poses questions as to their implications regarding the Buddhist devotee's ideals for life and death, the actual mortuary procedure, contemporaneous expectations for burial monuments, and related visual vocabulary and rhetoric. An elucidation of such details provides fundamental insight into medieval Chinese Buddhists' attitudes towards death and into their visual culture, and adds pivotal information to flesh out our understanding of Chinese religious culture.
