This paper seeks to compare and analyze the religious discourses produced in the formation process of modern states in East Asia, and religious geographical features formed by it, and to identify the characteristics that the public religion of each nation were bestowed with by such geographical features. Ways to cope with Western influence were necessarily different from one another among the three nations of Korea, China, and Japan. This was because of the differences in inherited historical traditions and location among the three nations in East Asia. Therefore, even though identical public religions arose in the three nations in similar periods, they had different aspects according to the differences in the ways that Western modernity was treated in each nation.
These religious dominant discourses that influenced concepts about modern religions have made played a central role in re-organizing the public religions of the three nations. These dominant discourses all have a close relation with the formation of modern nation states. These have not only become a foundation in making religious geographical features of each nation in present East Asia, but are also at the center of religious disputes that continue in East Asia even now. The issues of the Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to the Divine Shrine, China’s suppression of religions, and the engagement in politics by Korean religious groups are issues that continue to stir controversy and debate. These types of issues stem from the legacy of those discourses.
For the past 150 years, if we examine the results of ‘modernization of religion’ in East Asia, Japan has utilized the public religion of Shinto as a secular religion to incorporate and edify people. China has criticised and oppressed public religion, referred to as ‘people religion,’ as an anti-social perverted religion or anti-religious superstitions that were against civilization. In Korea public religion appeared as a religion of the Great Opening (gaebyeok; great unfolding) that contained volitions to reform societies. Especially, only Korean religions that advocated the Great Opening were very active in the new culture movement and anti-colonial struggle that were tasks of that time, and it was possible only because they were the public religions that championed the interests of the populace.
Lastly, alternatives to find a life style that embraces ecology and peace are currently being sought in many areas including among religions, and the alternatives have transcended the limitless confidence about rationality that the death of God, as a core of Western modernity, has brought, the anthropocentric ideology that considers nature as objects of human beings’ utilization, and the ideology of progress or development proclaimed in Western civilization. However, it is not certain yet, whether these alternatives remain at the level of resisting modernity, or go one step further to the acceptance that an alternative modernity is possible in reality.
