The fundamental attributes of the knowledge culture in Korea inevitably changed when it was annexed by Japan. The publishing market of colonial Korea was devastated because of the severe control imposed by imperial Japan; there were filled with publications only which were recommended by the authorities or going with them. At this historical juncture, Yi Guang-soo formulated the requirements of establishing a modern literature. Namely, amid the ruin of the spontaneous society of Korean intellectuals, he proposed the new criteria for literature and modernity-mostly patterned after those of Western Europe. However, among his suggestions was omitted the essential insight that literature is partly composed of and corresponds to the intricate knowledge produced by a modern civilization. Yi Guang-soo severed literature from learning/knowledge(學/知) and firmly advocated for a particular identity of literature, but his criteria were nothing more than partial and extrinsic. According to my observations, Yi`s recommendations constitute the expression of an intention to assimilate Zeitgeist through ‘리터래처(literature)’ in his own way amid the chaotic state of Korean intellectuals due to the loss of national sovereignty. His recommendations may therefore be interpreted as a quest for co-existence of literature and the realities of colonial rule in a situation which denied the comprehensive relationship between literature and society. That such a characteristic and existing method of literature could not find the interface with the realities of its time is not a mystery. I cannot but view what Yi Guang-soo argued in his essay <What is literature? (문학이란 何오)> as merely a kind of ‘over-soliloquy’ in the eclipse of knowledge culture and the intellectual community of Korea. Since the March 1st Movement, an intellectual sphere emerged together with private academies and through Korea`s mass print media, which laid down new conditions and encouraged a social network for a modern literature. An obvious discontinuity can be observed through the 1910s and 1920s in the history of Korea`s knowledge culture. For example, the literary sphere enabled by the monthly journal Gaebyeok showed how different the conditions of its time were from those of the previous decade. This new stage largely based on the private academies and intellectual community fostered by the diffused influence of Gaebyeok, marked a new milestone in the modern literature of Korea. Forging an identity and centralizing the forces of Korean society under the overwhelming presence of imperial Japan were very difficult tasks; they required a long-term scheme and a critical mind with concrete plans for praxis. Gaebyeok aimed to realize colonial Korea`s desire for self-expression, and in this sense, the literature of Gaebyeok may be regarded as an outcome of the process of recovering the knowledge culture network that had been devastated by the vortex of colonization and of constructing an independently forged Korean culture.
