The Joseon Dynasty appointed people who rendered distinguished services as meritorious subjects and bestowed many benefits upon them. One of the benefits included a large-scale, fulllength portrait of the subject that the king bestowed them. However, many of the portraits had been lost due to various disasters such as fire and war. Moreover, if the grounds for appointment as a meritorious subject disappeared due to various reasons - including those related to politics - then the appointment was canceled and the person therefore divested of the merit. There are found in some historical records that their portraits were destroyed when the meritorious subjects were divested of their honor.
When King Gwanghaegun was dethroned in 1623, those who had been appointed as meritorious subjects during his reign were all divested of their merit. According to the customs and records of the time, the portraits of the divested subjects had to be discarded, but a number of the portraits of the time of divesture remain to this day. Recently, two portraits and 13 sketches of Jo Gong-geun, a government official of the mid-Joseon Dynasty, have been revealed. This study seeks to explore the portraits of meritorious subjects of the seventeenth century and the production methods of their reproductions and sketches through the group of Portrait of Jo Gong-geun.
Of the two portraits of Jo Gong-geun , one is an original edition and the other is reproduction from a later generation. The original portrait, which is presumed to have been painted in 1613 at the time of the bestowment of the merits, is identical not only with portraits of meritorious subjects of the seventeenth century but also to those painted during the reign of King Gwanghaegun in terms of format and style. In other words, this is three-quarter-view from left, and it is a full length portrait with the figure seated in a chair. He is wearing samo , a black, flat official hat, and dalyeong , a black ceremonial robe, with an ornate chest insignia. The background is left plain, and a decorative carpet is depicted flat on the floor. The face and body are depicted with minimal shading, and the contour lines and wrinkle lines of the robe are all rendered in with the same thickness. These characteristics are also found in the portraits of Yu Suk, Im Jang, Yun Jung-sam , and a portrait attributed Yun Hyo-jeon , who are also meritorious subjects during the reign of King Gwanghaegun.
The Portrait of Jo Gong-geun (reproduction of the late Joseon Dynasty), which seems to have been painted in the late-Joseon Dynasty, is identical to the original edition at the time of the bestowment in terms of style. However, in reflection of the characteristics of the time, the portrait features stronger expression of light and shade of the face and body, and the only differences are parts of the detailed pattern design and colors. What is noteworthy that it is realistically depicted despite being a reproduction, and it is very similar to its original and therefore presumed to have been painted by an artist of exceptional talent. The 13 sketches can be largely divided into two groups – half-length portraits from head to chest; and full-length portrait from head to feet. The 12 pieces of Half -length Portrait Sketch of Jo Gong -geun are slightly different in terms of format and method of depiction and can therefore be divided into three groups. The full-length sketches of Jo Gong-geun is drawn on oiled paper without coloring on either front or back. The two types of sketches are different in terms of size, depiction method, and paper, it is presumed that they were used for different purposes.
The twelve Half -length Portrait Sketch of Jo Gong -geun seem to have been made to paint the Portrait of Jo Gong-geun (the original painting of 1613). These 12 sketches can be categorized into three groups – not only form and depiction method but also the inscription on the back of the drawings allow clear differentiation between groups. Among the three groups of A, B, and C, group A is possibly the sketches for the original portrait as viewed from the aspects of facial features, portrayal of the hat, undergarment around the neck, and shape of the ear of the subject. The Full-Half-length Portrait Sketch of Jo Gong-geun seems to have been drawn in preparation of the Portrait of Jo Gong-geun (reproduction of the late Joseon Dynasty). Because the sketch features neither coloring, shading, nor back painting, it was possibly just for drawing the outlines. In particular, the pattern on the neck of the full-length sketch is identical to the pattern of that of the reproduction rather than the original portrait; therefore, it can be observed that the reproduction of the late Joseon period was painted upon the completion of the sketch. In the Joseon Dynasty, it was the general custom to discard the portraits of the meritorious subjects when one was divested of one's merit, and this has been confirmed through historical records. However, the extant portraits of the meritorious subject painted during the reign of King Gwanghaegun demonstrate that there are exceptions to this custom. Moreover, the 12 sketches display a different modality from the sketcges of the late Joseon Dynasty, and they have confirmed that the production method of the sketches that had been only known through records. The reproduction of the Portrait of Jo Gong-geun has displayed a quality as high as that of the original, and the production method of the reproduction could be inferred through the full-length sketch. It is hoped that more works and records like these will come to light, allowing in-depth discussions on the aspects, characteristics, and significance of the Joseon Dynasty portraits of meritorious subjects.
