This paper investigates three fragments of the ceramic mould for two clay Buddha images from the Goguryeo(高句麗) period that were unearthed from a temple-site at Toseong-ri(土城里) in Pyongyang. The fragments, two of which belong to the collection at Seoul National Museum and the other to the collection at Pyongyang Central Museum of History, show the early stages of Goguryeo Buddhist sculptures. It is presumed that there were Buddhist temples built in the Toseong-ri territory around the time when Buddhism was first adopted by Goguryeo.
Archaeological research from the early twentieth century has revealed that roof tiles with double-lined lotus patterns(輻線蓮華紋瓦當) unearthed at Toseong-ri, quite similar in their shape and making technique to those discovered at Guknaeseong(國內城) in Jiahn(輯安), are dated to the late fourth and early fifth century before the Goguryeo dynasty transferred its capital to Pyongyang in 427 CE.
The mould acquired by the Pyongyang Central Museum is identical in size and sculptural detail to the clay Buddha images that were excavated at Wono-ri(元五里) temple-site near Pyongyang, now in the collection at Seoul National Museum and other museums in Japan and North Korea.
Buddha is shown as seated in a meditative posture with his two hands put together, palm to palm upon his abdomen, which is a typical posture seen in the images of the seated Buddha from the fourth and fifth century China. Below his hands, there are carvings of several vertical drapery folds in equal intervals. The drapery folds, together with the hand gesture, appear in several Northern Wei(北魏) Buddha images from the fifth century, especially from the Shanxi(陝西) and Kansu(甘肅) territories. The posture and the woman-like appearance of Buddha seen in this image are reminiscent of Chinese Xiwangwu(西王母) images of the Later Han and Six Dynasties. It can be assumed that the cult of Xiwangwu prevailed under the Lolang(樂浪) Commandery of Han China in Pyongyang until it was seized by Goguryeo in 313 CE.. The remnants of the cult may have had a strong impact on the Goguryeo culture of Pyongyang, testified by the Xiwangwu painting of Gamsinchong(龕神塚), the Goguryeo mural tomb of the early fifth century.
The two pieces from the Seoul National Museum are fragments of the same mould for the seated Buddha image that now only shows his robe drapery covering the pedestal. Although the face and upper body parts are missing, the plaster cast of these fragments shows a unique rendering of drapery folds that are shown as divided into three equal parts. The folds compare closely to those in the Buddha images from the late fifth century Southern Chi(南齊) of the Southern Dynasties of China, which demonstrates the influence of Southern Dynasties on the Goguryeo Buddhist sculptures in their early stages. During the Southern Dynasty of China, the methods for representing drapery folds changed from carving them in three parts to rendering them more naturally. However in the Toseong-ri of Goguryeo, the old traditional way of carving drapery was continued in the sixth century Buddha images and in the early sculptures of the Balhae period. It is interesting to note that these two types of iconography shown in the Toseong-ri moulds also show traces of another type of the Buddha image, shown in the now missing Buddha image reportedly from Hwangju.
The three fragments that make up the mould of the Buddha image from Toseong-ri identify with both the Buddhist sculptures of the Southern and Northern dynasties, exhibiting their significance in establishing the first stage of Goguryeo Buddhist sculptures. Furthermore, the moulds from Toseong-ri trace to an early prototype of the seated Buddha image from the Southern dynasty in which Buddha is in a meditative posture with his hands put together palm to palm on his belly and his skirt carved in three parts covering the pedestal.
